It has been said before but going to MTH on Haskell Day and leaving before the race doesn't make any sense what-so-ever. A) it's going to be very hot that day, so to go down there without reserved seats should be a non-starter for you. Go to Stub Hub and buy yourself some tickets. Next, it will be the most crowded day of the year, and unless you get really jacked up over the fact that you are likely to get annoyed by at least 2-3 people per race, stay away. But, of course, if you want to see some 3 YO's that will likely be running in 4 weeks in the Travers, by all means go.

That is a long hike from Long Island, so I assume you love the races. You are going to be stuck in traffice, no matter when you go. Take out you google maps and plot this ride home. Rt 36 West to Rt 18 North. Jump on the NJT in New Brunswick and take it to the Outerbridge.

Or take the train. NJT goes right to MTH Park. Stay away from the GSP.
