Going to Monmouth on sunday/please read
 

Leaving Naasau county long island in the morning say 8:00, Our 1st time to momouth, anything you recommend to do /drink/see/sit when we get there?

How many people will be there on Haskell day/Approx?

we're not staying for the haskell, because of the Brutal trip back to long island/All the beach traffic!!!!.........What time would you think might be good to leave the track, so not to get caught in the traffic

Tom, I really think that Haskell Day is the wrong day to make the trek out to Monmouth for the first time. Especially if you don't plan on staying for the big race, it just seems like a waste.

It will be crowded, everything will be more expensive and seat/good spots will be even harder to come by.

I recommend going upstairs in the grandstand as soon as you get there and buy a couple of reserved seats. They will be fairly cheap and you should have a good view of the track. Also you will be covered from the elements. More importantly it doesn't get as crowded up there so the lines at the windows, food stands and restrooms should be a little shorter.

Chances are whatever time you come and go, the traffic is going to suck. People will be heading to the beach when you are coming and heading home when you are leaving. Not sure which way you are getting to Jersey, but there is a strong chance you will be in some sort of traffic. The weather plays a big part also in what time people start heading home. A couple of tips, if you stay on the Garden State Parkway, stay in the local lanes (towards the right) after the split at 124. If it is backed up already over there, take exit 123 (rt 9 south) about 7 miles to route 18 south (left lane exit) and follow the signs for Eatontown (Monmouth Park) and that will circumvent the GSP.

It definitely a nice track to visit, but like I said i think it's a bit aggressive making Haskell day your first visit. As of now, I will be there, but things around here change very quickly and my pardon from the president can go up in flames at any moment.

Good advise above. As far as I am concerned any day is the right day to visit MP. But if you are intent on coming down Sunday definitely get reserved seats in the grandstand. It will help you avoid a vast amount of aggravation due to the large crowd. If the weather is good I expect upwards of 40k in attendance.

Avoid taking rt 36 all the way to the track. Look at a map; take Wyckoff road just east of the Parkway off Rt. 36. Park in the grandstand preferred lot. When exiting I would head north and get back on the Parkway at exit 109. Again consult a map. It's very simple, really.

Try the clam chowder. It is stellar.

Leave at 5, that's after the beach people leave but before the people who want to have dinner hit the road.
You can also come down, get off at exit 117, head straight down through sea bright and monmouth beach if you want to see the ocean and then turn right on Joline, hitting the track from the other side. That would have to be really early though, sandy hook can close by 11 on sunday mornings.

Think Hamptons traffic with Jersey drivers.

Before you leave for home you might want to stop at Max's Famous Hotdogs. They're the best I've ever had. Here's the link with the directions..

It has been said before but going to MTH on Haskell Day and leaving before the race doesn't make any sense what-so-ever. A) it's going to be very hot that day, so to go down there without reserved seats should be a non-starter for you. Go to Stub Hub and buy yourself some tickets. Next, it will be the most crowded day of the year, and unless you get really jacked up over the fact that you are likely to get annoyed by at least 2-3 people per race, stay away. But, of course, if you want to see some 3 YO's that will likely be running in 4 weeks in the Travers, by all means go.

That is a long hike from Long Island, so I assume you love the races. You are going to be stuck in traffice, no matter when you go. Take out you google maps and plot this ride home. Rt 36 West to Rt 18 North. Jump on the NJT in New Brunswick and take it to the Outerbridge.

Or take the train. NJT goes right to MTH Park. Stay away from the GSP.

That is definitely going out of the way to end up in the same s.hitty spot. Honestly, if you are going to end up on the turnpike, you might as well go all the way up to the GW Bridge and get to Long Island from there. On Sunday nights, the Outer and Goethals bridges are absolute suicide missions. From the Turnpike, you can loop around and take the Bayonne bridge to Staten Island . It is out of the way, but you will circumvent some traffic from the 2 other bridges and some of the S.I. expressway that backs up horribly EVERY Sunday.

The train might be a very good option and worth looking in to.

I think his best bet is taking a train into Penn Station and then a train to Monmouth. Stay for the Haskell and then hop on the train back. Relaxing and not have to deal with any traffic.

They can actually take Hylan Blvd from the OTB to the VNB but I get your point, and there is no right answer. Everything is a cluster **ck on Sunday nights, so train likely is the best option. I live in Bergen Co and will take either 35 North through the Amboys or 18 N through N Brunswick and figure it out from there.

I am way too familiar with that location...................:o

Enjoy, stay for the race and seriously consider the train as an option.
