Default TX bred 2yo Canigotoo with 96 BSF in debut..

Anyone catch the debut of Canigotoo? Bret Calhoun TX bred 2yo aired by a dozen at Lone Star Thursday earning a 96 Beyer for the 5f romp. Son of the utterly obscure Menhal, a Danzig son that won once in 4 tries (GG) and was retired. "Good horse can come from anywhere..."

Yeah I heard about this horse. Not completely out of nowhere despite the sire (although I suppose the Danzig blood ain't for nothing). His dam is half to Captain Bodgit. She's not a blue blood by any means (a bit of an understatement), but that part got my attention. The rest of the family though, eh. Kind of telling is this quote from an article about Captain Bodgit and Free House's breeding during the 1997 TC trail. http://articles.baltimoresun.com/199...ptain-bodgit/2

CB's breeder: "You know the old saying: Breed the best to the best and hope for the best?" Wiest said.

"What it really is, is breed the best to the best that you can afford -- and hope for the best."

I'm gonna guess he still owns CB's half-sister, Canigotoo's dam Bella Selene. Menhal's a private fee Texas stallion, and I don't suppose a very costly one, so it would fit into the plan.

Kip Deville was by the obscure Kipling. That said I'm sceptical to say the least about fast early 2yo's.

I'm more skeptical of Lone Star Park Beyer figures.

Skeptical? About what? It's a TX-bred 2yo that debuted smashingly on a Thursday night at Lone Star. He's not being touted as the likely Breeders' Cup Juvenile favorite.

Take a look at the chart and pp's and watch the race and look at the 5th race at the same distance. Whatever you want to think about the 'Lone Star Park Beyer figures', this was a big debut.

Calhoun said he's just a very fast, commonly bred juvy.

L T Smith Enterprises owns Bella Selena and have been breeding her since 1997's Breezin Bella (Rare Brick). She produced a KY bred $300k earner with Lit De Justice named Lettherebejustice (2001) that made most of his money in Canada. After that, Bella Serena was moved to Texas and has dropped foals by Lite the Fuse, Gold Legend, Wimbledon and Exciting Story since then, and now Menhal.

This one isn't Breeders' Cup nominated. As far as the Beyer, it's highly unusual to see a big fig like that from a 2yo at Lone Star. Seems like the numbers at mid-major tracks like LS always skew a bit lower, so a fig like this indicates some serious ability that transfer to other circuits.

Thanks Steve. I always liked Lit de Justice. The Breeders' Cup nomination site didn't have foals listed for 2010 or 2011 for Bella Selene. I'm curious to know if she's in foal this year. From what I can tell, Canigotoo would need a $6000 payment by the end of June to be BC eligible. Might be a good idea to get the cash together. Even if they don't want to try the BC Juvenile, there's always the new sprint race.

who was that horse a while back for Gary West that won by like 22 lenghts at Lousiana Downs or something at first asking, and did run nicely in its next 2-3 starts but then tailed off or something when moved up to face better.

An awesome debut. At the top of the stretch: "Canigotoo just rebroke!" Indeed.

He didn't really tail off when facing better though, he won the Forego and placed in the Cigar Mile and Met Mile.

Uh... I think I just mistakenly transcribed it when I typed 98.

But I'll go ahead and ask what snide point were you trying to make anyway...
