Why run both the James Marvin and the Vanderbilt?

It's 16 days apart... in the old (10 years ago) days that would have been perfect for a prep... hopefully some of these come back in the Vandy.

The Marvin is a 7F race, with many layoff or turnback horses. Aside from a race-ready Vineyard Haven, I'm hard-pressed to identify a single horse in this race that would be a candidate for the 6F Vanderbilt.
PJ Campo has run some duplicative overnight stakes up here the past few years that make you scratch your head (Curlin/Jim Dandy and a listed stakes for 3YO filly sprinters on the Test undercard, by way of example), but this has a far different feel. Last year, the 1-2 finishers in the race were Pyro and Gold Trippi, hardly Vanderbilt candidates at the time. |
