I had received an IRS notice that certain information on my 2008 1040 did not match information the IRS received. Specifically, I accidentally omitted two W2G's (about $2,500 in total). The notice calculated additional taxes owed as a result.

I was in the process of gathering my internet account statement and some paper tickets to prove the omitted W2G's could be offset by losses.

I called the IRS # on the notice to ask a question before I submitted the documentation. I explained the situation that I accidentally omitted the two W2-G's, that I had itemized in 2008 and that I planned to submit supporting documentation by mail to show losses to offset the additional income. On my original return I showed losses equal to W2-G winnings.

The agent said if that was the case, she could close it out over the phone and no return of the examination notice would be required. She gave me her name and ID and hopefully, that's it.

Just a heads up to perhaps give a call first if you get a notice like this instead of paying someone to follow up or sending in a bunch of documentation that may do more harm than good.

Who would have thought...
Be careful. I did the same thing and now they've come back and NOT adjusted for losses. They are claiming I owe all of the amount, not adjusted, and it's a real mess. Get confirmation of the adjustment in writing.
