Why does Pletcher go to the California Derby with Connemara, when he can get graded earnings against a 5 horse field on a surface he already won over?

Good question. Is it possible he just wants him to go 8.5 rather than the mile? That is the only think I can think of, although given that there will be plenty of opportunities at 8.5 in the months ahead, I'm not sure how much sense that reason would make.
All in all it seems like the San Rafael would make more sense.

Edit: He would be the longest shot in the race and is significantly slower (per the Beyer numbers) off his last. Makes sense now I guess
