I think he was Mandella's first star horse, as the only decent horse I remember him having prior to Phone Trick was Menswear. Caller One I believe won the Dubai race once. Mazel Trick, yeah, he was cut out for greatness. 4 for 4 on dirt. His first start on dirt resulted in an alw win in 114.4 (6.5f) with a BSF of 104. This as a 3yo. Next, as a 3yo as well, he won the Laz Barrera by 2 over Dixie Dot Com in 141.2 with a BSF of 112. Off 7 months, start #3 is in the Triple Bend, the race he's most remembered for. He wins this by 5 over a pretty decent field, in 119.4. BSF 118. Then there is his last start, the one that really stamped him for greatness in my eyes. He won the San Diego by 6 in 140.3 for another BSF of 118. In second was the razor sharp River Keen. River Keen was coming out of a g2 win in the Bel Air (113 BSF). In River Keen's next start he ran second to General Challenge in the Pacific Classic, and then shipped to NY where he swept the Woodward and Jockey Club Gold Cup (both 117). I cannot think of too many horses that could have beaten Mazel Trick on dirt. |
