Brian, I think you are confusing the issue. I totally agree with you that you should give your business to businesses that you are comfortable with and that share your morals, beliefs, and that type of thing. But I think that is totally different from this story where the decision is made solely based on race.

But you're only going halfway to where this story goes. Obviously, they're spending their dollars solely based on race, but they're doing so because as she said, she felt like "my people have been here 400 years and we don't even have a Walgreens to show for it."

So the reason for her support is that she thinks that black business owners are underrepresented and undersupported. So outside of vowing to spend her money only at those businesses to help change what she sees as a problem, what else would you have her do?

The only way she and her husband can personally influence and help change the fact that she feels they're underrepresented and undersupported is to go out and support them herself.

You're saying she shouldn't do that, and that it's racist to do that?

If I think gay business owners are underrepresented, how else would you have me go about helping to change that besides vowing to spend my money to support them?

It sounds like you're okay with her wanting black business owners to prosper and increase in numbers and successes, but not okay with her actually doing the only thing she can do to make that happen.

i just wish everyone would treat everyone else as human beings without looking at their skin color. that would solve so many issues. i've heard that said around here-'i won't eat/shop there. the owners aren't from here'. hell, i'm not 'from here'. but i look the same as the dipshit saying that, and that's all he's concerned about. makes me so angry.

I have no problem with a family doing a social experiment like they are doing.. They even call it an experiment. I also feel like there is no racism involved in this particular situation.

good businesses have so much to fear from affinity shopping campaigns.

just ask toyota about the destruction wrought when their competitors replaced good design and solid workmanship with "buy american" ads in the 70's.

a few businesses that otherwise wouldn't may benefit for a short period from this sort of nonsense but in the long run, rational behavior prevails.

Is Walgreens unwilling to sell franchises to blacks?

Is it racist to only support black businesses? Of course it is. Imagine if a white guy said the same thing? It isn't as though there are all these businesses owned by blacks that are at a disadvantage because of that. I have no idea what color or nationality is of the owner of the supermarket i shop at, the gas station that I use or the restaurants that i frequent (except El Caporal). In 2009 what should matter is the price and service you get, not what color the owner is. Continuing to rationalize racist behavior isn't furthering the cause.

I can see what you're saying but it still doesn't seem like a good idea to me because the goal is to have an integrated society. If certain groups start isolating themselves by totally sticking together, then the result will be the opposite of the intended goal. You will end up with a segregated society.
