I don't fault Victor for not asking the horse at the head of the stretch. As you said, a smart jockey is not going to use the horse too much in a race like this, especially when he thought he had the race won. The problem with the ride was that he was head and head on a really fast pace. He should have sat 3-4 lengths off the pace.
