His owners spent 20 to 30k to save a horse that's worth zero. They could have saved 10 healthy ones that didnt need such intense medical treatment. What was more important to do, fix the one that earned a pile, or using the resources(money) to save healthy others in need? It's a tough question, I have only my thoughts, I dont think there is a right or wrong answer.. Enjoy a real question!

He earned almost $800k.. I think it was a great show of gratitude on their part to give him a chance to at least have a happy life. As the article says, any sign of a bad step they would have stopped.
