Monday, August 10th, 2015

Thoroughly spectacular day at SAR Saturday with the racing, weather, crowd and everything else as close to perfect as it gets. Featured Whitney lived up to promise with thrilling rally by Honor Code that snatched the laurels from Liam’s Map who ran as remarkable a race as a horse can without winning. Honor Code answered the two turn question with authority, but also confirmed that a heated pace scenario is paramount to his best chances given that the opening half mile here going the two turn mile and an eighth was identical to that in the one turn Met Mile. Cavorting efficiently dispatched her foes in the Test while maiden winner Economic Model led what looks like a very good group of 2yo’s in the 3rd with Set the Trappe and Star Hill are not long for the maiden ranks. So much great action again Saturday, but on to Sunday.. Hope everyone enjoyed and did well!

9th: 88th Whitney (G1), 3+, 9f (P3, DD)

As strong a Whitney lineup as anyone can recall including last year’s returning defender (Moreno), this year’s Met Mile star (Honor Code), a Belmont-JCGC winner (Tonalist), the ’15 Foster hero (Noble Bird), the ’14 Travers champ (V.E. Day), plus Wicked Strong, Lea, Normandy Invasion and Liam’s Map. You’ll have to make a few deductions to whittle down the list and you could start with taking a stand against Honor Code who just seems so much better suited to one turn pace scenarios. Coach Inge SCR’ing leaving Moreno and Liam’s Map as your speeds with Noble Bird a pressing pressence. Wicked Strong, Tonalist, Lea and Normandy Invasion should comprise the second flight with V. E. Day and Honor Code trailing. If Moreno and Liam’s Map do not cancel each other dueling, the deep closers will be highly compromised. Liam’s Map feels like the contender to catch in the stretch at a value adding Mike Smith and toting a strong worktab. Noble Bird gets first run on him with Tonalist and Wicked Strong the stretch threats. He won’t be 20-1, but Wicked Strong is the right price to work around given his nearly perfect efforts over this surface, the addition of Luis Saez and Jimmy Jerkens plot for this assignment..

P4’s come together ahead of Whitney Weekend

Friday, August 7th, 2015

Caught some ‘Best Value’ waves Thursday and righted a number of wrongs with a $652 late quad pop at Saratoga ahead of a $1,309 yahtzee at Del Mar. In New York, overlaid Also-Eligible draw-in Robe ($14.40) and sneaky live Mom’z Laugh ($17.40) boosted the P4 hit, while in California, consistently underbet Vicky Oliver sent She’s Not Here ($25.60) out to upset Indecise in the feature. Had all the carryover P6 winners somewhere, but they weren’t easy to tie together as evidenced by the single winner of $333,444. All in all, the best day of the summer season that went a long way towards balancing the ledger. Hope everyone did well! Late start at Del Mar means a 9:00pm ET P4 start and best part of Spa card is 7th-10th which kicks at 4:21pm ET.

Spa returns remain attractive; Another DMR carry!

Thursday, August 6th, 2015

Despite just one winner in the sequence paying over $10, the SAR double carryover paid a handsome $74k Wednesday. As noted going in, the sheer breadth of the multiples involved in the sequence and superfluous coverage it generates, guaranteed that the payoff would be sizable. After a solid start to the series, the top tabs in the 8th-10th all settled for 2nd’s including Stonetastic who ran stoutly in her 4yo debut but could turn back Unbridled Forever. Hope everyone did OK Wednesday. Action Thursday includes the first G1 of the Steeplechase season and another carryover at DMR.

SARATOGA

POST-SCRATCHES

5th: CLM/N2L, 3+, 5.5f-T (P6, P3, DD)

$206k DBL P6 C/O starts here..

For all the perception of turf sprints being chaotic, they certainly have been formful at SAR thus far. 14 lawn dashes have been run in 10 days and 6 have been won by the favorite. An additional 5 were copped by runners priced between 2-1 and 7-2. With a seeming short supply of all-out speed types signed on, it appears you’re best served looking for logical players that will be forwardly-placed and shorter priced. Wes Welker’s first time 4yo Eighty Three (Wesley Ward; 5-2) is the obvious horse to beat and Klaravich’s Sourcesandmethods (2/19 Fair Grounds turf sprint; 4-1) is the best of those that will have to rally. Repole’s Triple Play (6-1) has dirt speed and though Bruce Levine isn’t known for moving horses to the turf (5%; 0.63), he’s more than OK (21%; $1.94) in sod hops overall. Well bred Decent (7-2) gets Castellano first off the Kenneally claim (24%; $1.60) and will be in striking distance from the bell. Downgoesfrazier (Domino; 12-1) has several races good enough to win this, but they’ve come downstate at 7f-T and beyond. On that topic, note there’s only one entrant in this non-winners of 2 event whose tally came at this trip at the Spa: 30-1 Greeley Pack (Kathleen Feron 0/27 this year). One Eyed Ray (10-1) is a new gelding for Trombetta as well as first time for a tag. Jim Catterbone’s (well-followed black cat head silks) Prophet’s Cat (15-1) has been close in last pair of 6f-T versions since going to Saez..

Most Likely: #8 Eighty Three 5-2 2nd
Next Best: #4 Sourcesandmethods 4-1 7th
Best Value: #6 One Eyed Ray 10-1 4th
Exotics Use: #10 Decent 7-2 WON ($9.00)

6th: CLM, 3+, 1m-IT (G/S, P3, DD)

Question here is who/if/when Banzai Charge (5-1; P. Lopez) and/or Bowman’s Beast (12-1; R. Hernandez) will engage Street Shark SCR’D (15-1; Cruz), because if they don’t, the Joe Parker trainee can take them all the way around. The rest of the cast features class dippers with merit (Honor the Kitten, Bigger Picture, Abtaal, McIlroy) and a dangerous 20-1 player from Moquett in $800k earner Bim Bam. Klesaris (Upgrade) and Gargan (Rapscallion) rise in class a notch off claims..

Best Value: #6 Banzai Charge 5-1 8th
Next Best: #5 Abtaal 9-2 WON ($8.50)
Exotics Use: #1 Honor the Kitten 7-2 2nd
Super Add: #9 McIlroy 6-1 7th

Older maidens with top connected, well-working firsters (Excuse My French, Istiraaha, Vacation Spot) facing off with several obvious players with experience (She’s a True Beauty, Prospector’s Moon, Bird Sense, Sanctifica)..

Hard to not expect good U.S. debut from Clement’s Crisolles. Enough for a single? Maybe..

Most Likely: #8 Crisolles 3-1 2nd
Next Best: #6 La Madrina 6-1 6th
Best Value: #2 Cash Control 15-1 5th
Exotics Use: #10 Distorted Beauty 5-1 4th

9th: Shine Again,

Stonetastic makes 4yo debut on strip where she dominated in the Prioress a year ago. As Nick Tammaro pointed out, Kelly Breen had options out of her stall at MTH, so fact she returns here notable. Frankly, if you don’t lean on her heavily, you’re in a ticket-building quandry as there are probably another half dozen after her that you’d need to consider..

Most Likely: #3 Stonetastic 5-2 2nd
Best Value: #10 Taketheodds 15-1 3rd
Next Best: #6 Wavell Avenue 4-1 4th
Exotics Use: #8 Bird Maker 15-1 9th
