KEE too tough to tame; Last big Derby dances today

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

Keeneland continued to play hard Friday, as even including winners in the selections didn’t mean much as they were left off the multis! The reward when the magic happens is clearly worth the effort and investment though, as the carryover P5 produced a $6,445 payoff, the P4 came back at $1,407. The Hi-5 nightcap was a gaudy $21,556. Hope you did OK despite my direction Friday.

Blue Grass and Arkansas Derby Days at Keeneland and Oaklawn, and Charles Town celebrates tonight with its’ first graded stakes race, the $1,000,000 G3 Classic. Santa Anita will start its’ closing weekend with a $60k+ P6 C/O. Weather in KY and WV will be wet and cool, meaning you should anticipate a faster version of Keeneland’s poly. Have very little time to analyze the action this morning as I make my way to Louisville and a 1pm flight… Enjoy what should be a fun day!

Other than dirt, and CD proven, Santiva, hard to know if any here can impact Derby, but that doesn’t stop it from being a fun betting race. As noted above, the wet, cool weather will likely produce strong performances from speed types. Watch how the day develops in routes (2nd, 4th, 5th), because if indeed the track goes glib, oddball frontrunner Joes Blazing Aaron will take them a long way..

OAKLAWN PARK

PRE-SCRATCHES

11th: Arkansas Derby (G1), 3yo, 9f (DD, Super)

Pretty fascinating edition of this event, and you can make a case for virtually all of them if forced. If you don’t think The Factor can or will win, you will have great fun with your plays. I think he’s bona fide, and unless hounded throughout, will acquit himself well. After him, the Von Hemel entry offers value if anywhere close to the ML. After that, who knows. It will depend entirely on how the pace scenario unfolds..

Most Likely: #4 The Factor 7-5
Best Value: #1e Von Hemel entry (Caleb’s Posse/Alternation) 10-1
Exotics Use: #9 Aracharcharch 12-1

Keeneland batters bettors; $51k P5 C/O Friday

Friday, April 15th, 2011
Took a proper thrashing Thursday at Keeneland getting only the single of Shug’s Boisterous right during another contentious sequence highlighted by owner-trainer Chuck Trout upsetting the G1 Madison with his Okie homebred Thunder Gulch filly Shotgun Gulch. No one negotiated the P5, creating a $51k carryover in today’s difficult skein, and the P4 brought back another bulbous bankroll of $3,687. The one that felt like it got awat, was the nightcap winner Safe Crossing, a Jonathon Sheppard-George Strawbridge firster that paid $31.60. The Stormy Atlantic filly was the field’s lone entrant without a past performance, but Sheppard has hit with debut types starting out at a mile or more (22% from last 18 starters over 3 years). Hope you didn’t get as beaten up as I did yesterday… Let’s try to get it all back and more on today’s P5 carryover!

Keeneland multis produce monster mutuels, Hi-5 C/O

Thursday, April 14th, 2011
‘Big balloons’ wafted all around Keeneland Wednesday, and I flirted with various multi hits that ultimately came up short. The P5 paid an outrageous $42,264 to one winner, while consos paid $265. The P4 was a $23.7k bonanza, while the 5-7, 6-8 and 7-9 P3’s brought back $233, $1,500 and $4,127! The biggest frustration came from using $46.40 8th race winner Joshua Reynolds on the plays, but I missed Sassy’s Dream in the 6th and my top trio in the nightcap ran 2nd, 3rd and 4th to $16.80 Ratatat. But like Gulfstream earlier this winter, you have to keep pitching under these full field conditions. The best opinion of the day came in the 5th when P5 single Spooky Kitten keyed exotics of $44.50 (EXA), $205.90 (TRI) and $1,234 (SPR). Hope you did well… Another tough sequence today which includes the G1 Vinery Madison.

Mo disappoints on generally good day; AQU P6 carries

Sunday, April 10th, 2011
Curious day Saturday with the obviously disappointing performance of Uncle Mo the focus of nearly everyone. From my perspective, we can go back to the Timely Writer discussion and the lack of ‘bottom generating’ effort it produced, to help explain the 2yo Champion tiring visably over the last 150 yards of the Wood. In the artificial stake exercise at Gulfstream, Uncle Mo only ran a quarter mile with seriously relish, and that was followed up with two half mile breezes.

If Todd Pletcher believed that kind of lead up was going to be enough to have Uncle Mo ready for the colt’s first 9f try, he will know better for the next time the situation arises. Then again, he might not given the Pletcher playbook that invariably relies on these kinds of maintainance drills instead of long slow gallops or stouter wind-generating 5-7f works. The Repole Team now find themselves forced to play catch up with Uncle Mo, and perhaps they still have enough to work with to be the kind of factor in the Classics that has been anticipated since the Breeders’ Cup. But their confidence has been shaken badly and the veneer is on the undeniably outstanding Juvenile is dulled considerably.

The day leading up to the Wood was delightful fun at Aqueduct, on a lovely spring afternoon, with a robust crowd jammed into the truncated, under-construction facility. The stakes winners in the Comely, Bay Shore and Carter were popular, with avariety of connections getting moments in the sun. David Dawkes (Hot Summer), Bill Anderson (JJ’s Lucky Train) and Nick Zito assistant Tim Poole (Morning Line) legged up Luis Saez, Jose Ferrer and John Velasquez on the heroine and heroes, and all three races authored stories that will be fun to relate on “At the Races” this week. That brought us to the feature, and Graham Motion, breeder-owner Diane Cotter and Eddie Castro, and another set of principals whose success produced warm reaction.

Elsewhere on the Derby Trail scene , Bob Baffert continued his general wizardry, getting Arnie Zetcher’s maiden winner Midnight Interlude home in the final jump over dogged Comma to the Top. With The Factor in good position going into Saturday’s Arkansas Derby and Jaycito pausing for the Lexington, the Triple Crown-focused Hall of Famer appears ready for a three-pronged assault on Louisville. Pletcher’s day wasn’t a total loss, as Ahmed Zayat’s Joe Vann finally fulfilled some of his promise winning the marginalized Illinois Derby. The colt is not Triple Crown nominated, and it would cost Zayat an additional $20,000 with his $180,000 check from Hawthorne to gain possible Derby entry.

Could not produce a P4 winner Saturday, but had some solid opinions that netted some exotic hits and P3’s. Hope you did OK! Nice carryover into Sunday’s Aqueduct card…
