GP, SA action ends great 2011.. Happy New Year!

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

A good year of horse play comes to an end! Excellent action all over the country and Tina and I will spend the afternoon at Aqueduct for My Pal of Pals run in the 4th. Warm wishes for a safe and happy New Year’s Eve and healthy, prosperous 2012!

Last chance for win at 2 for these fillies and several here have dams that caught my eye. Lobshot is o/o the excellent Chspiski that tore up Calder stakes 10 years ago for Ron Spatz; Hidinginplainsight’s dam Hot Storm was a very nice stakes sprinter for Dallas Stewart 2004-07 amassing $840k in 10 wins and multiple GS placings; Bright Gal dropped Lemon Hero and won 10 times as a top notch turf dasher when trained by Mary Eppler..

AQU chalky; GP & SA offer carryover opps

Thursday, December 29th, 2011

Chalkout at Aqueduct Wednesday resulted in $50 loss on successful P4 play. Sequence had potential to go in much more lucrative direction however with near miss by 8-1 Swinging at Siro’s in duel with Perfect Drive in the 6th. Plus, though I didn’t use 35-1 runner-up Take Down Two in the 7th, there was a real possibility for him to win or get moved up had Coosada been DQ’d. So despite the $19 payoff in the quad, you can easily see how quickly the worm can turn in multi-race skiens. P6 at Santa Anita has fat $148k carry to start and Gulfstream features a $77k C/O in their P5..

Interesting group of 2yo’s on lawn including Colonel John/Mr. Hot Stuff full brother Bill of Rights who receives T2D & Blinkers On makeover. Don’t think they would be going green if he were any kind of colt. Silverton/Darren Miller bring Euro import in for 1st N.A. bid exiting what looks like it might have been nice company in Ireland. Pletcher/Starlight move Bridge Loan — Empire Maker out of MSW Giant’s Causeway mare — to appropriate surface. Mott introduces Kinsman homebred by English Channel and you wouldn’t think they’d name him Yankee Boss (after late farm patriarch) if he were a bum..

SA starts off big; AQU returns to the menu

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

With Christmas in the rear view, winter racing began in earnest Monday as Santa Anita kicked off with an enormous bang. The largest Opening Day crowd in nearly 20 years thronged Arcadia with 4 stakes and several big prices helping to make the start of the 2011-12 season a smash. The SA P6 carried over to Thursday with a $148k pot to chase, a figure that could result in a seven figure pool. The wagering Monday went OK despite misses in the late P4 and P5 as triples in the Malibu ($120) and Sir Beaufort ($48) more than balanced out the afternoon’s punts. Mr. Commons lived up to expectations by outclassing the Sir Beaufort field, while The Factor made the most of his outside draw and some adventageous circumstances in the Malibu.

While I had no complaints with Rothko’s runner-up effort as my top choice, I thought his $5.60-1 tab at post time was quite generous at post time and I loaded up more than usual on the front end with him. Rothko was certainly impeded a bit when Centralinteligence abruptly halted and I thought Nakatani’s brief indecision at the eighth pole made it impossible to engage The Factor the way he needed to in order to win. But Martin Garcia rode The Factor as well as he possibly could and helped provide Bob Baffert with what had been a glaringly elusive G1 on his resume.

New York’s deep winter calendar begins peeling away Wednesday with the post-Holiday break ending and the inner track meet getting the long-anticipated purse account boost. The second race at Aqueduct marks the first particularly eye-widening offering, as open company Maiden Specials run for a $65,000 satchel. While the overall quality of the fields will take more time to morph, field size is notably fuller at a glance immediately with the pre-SCR P6 sequence boasting races with 9 (3), 10 (2) and 11 (1). Even though 4 of those 6 races are comprised of claiming types worth $10-15k, the volume will help provide larger payouts within races and in multis. On top of the bulkier fields, there will also be the positive payoff impact of the delayed superexotic takeout which sees a reduction to 24% today in the biggest multi-race and multi-horse bets.

Hope everyone is enjoying the Holiday Season! Swing at the Santa Anita carryover Thursday and a little action today at the Big A…

Regular readers know my tendency is to look elsewhere when a horse like Midnight Transfer (3-1) — short priced with 0-fer a handful — is involved. In this case, I’ll give Gaines’ Hard Spun colt a chance to get it done off sequence of nice works during freshener. Mandella returns Unmarked Bills (6-1), half to Regal Ransom (Distorted Humor) and doomed Devil May Care (Malibu Moon) and Posse son may improve significantly with bow under belt. (Mandella 20% W’s, 58% ITM with 2nd out 2yo’s). Pair of Baffert firsters look serious off series of sharp drills with Lasso getting Martin Garcia and Bernster Rafael Bejarano. Bernster is a full to Cal sire Marino Marini who was nipped a head by Southern Image in the Malibu 8 years ago today..

Futurity hit saves day; Must pay C/O’s juice HOL closing

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

Frustrating early beats at Fair Grounds slowly gave way to some NoLa bingos before the Hollywood feature provided the day’s best moment. Identifying the legitimate from the less so in the Cash Call lineup went a long way towards a sweep of the exotics as Most Likely Liaison was a professional winner at a bonus 5-1 giving Bob Baffert his 6th win in the Futurity. 20-1 ML Best Value choice Brother Francis was bet down to 12-1 but hung on for 3rd to generate a day-saving $476 trifecta. As mentioned in Saturday’s race opinion, Jerry Hollendorfer’s Rousing Sermon (13-1, twice his ML tote of 6-1) did prove out as a Hollywood-appreciative male version of Starlet upsetter Killer Graces chasing home the winner as in the November prep for this important stake.

With the Baffert trio splitting mutuel support, distance-challenged Majestic City went off a surprising 3-1 favorite and excluding him from serious consideration went a long way towards isolating the superfecta ($2,524) among the quintet tabbed. Blingo was my 5th horse in the Futurity and the Moss-Shirreffs colt will continue to merit attention after finishing 6th (beaten 3L) while moving late and catching the leaders past the wire in only his second start. Along with Blingo and 4th place finisher Sky Kingdom, another horse still learning and likely to get better with added ground is Empire Way who finished an obfuscated 5th.

While a fun and lucrative wagering opp, the Futurity didn’t exactly enhance the reputation of this 2yo crop with the year end looming. Though the fig isn’t out yet, the top pair is likely to receive a moderate 90ish Beyer for their efforts. There hasn’t been a triple digit Beyer earned in the Futurity since Brother Derek’s 102 in 2005 and as always, its too early to to laud or condone the group when you look at the winning fig of recent winners of this race:

2010 Comma to the Top 95
2009 Looking at Lucky 83
2008 Pioneerof the Nile 86
2007 Into Mischief 95
2006 Stormello 94

(NOTE: DRF’s Brad Free confirmed a 90 Beyer for Liaison & Rousing Sermon via Twitter.)

Saturday’s HollyPark fireworks tripped carryovers in both the P5 and the P6 and with Sunday being the meet-ender, both skeins have ‘must pay’ tags on them. The Super Hi-5 cannot carry as well. Hope everyone enjoyed Saturday and are ready for a fun Sunday of action!

Tough accepting 11x starter Alala at 5-2 here, but it’s a very modest group, she adds blinkers, retains Rosario and has shown steady, incremental improvement. Luckyvic gets grass bow and sire Gotham Sire clicks at 21% with his ‘first turf’ runners. Lindz Winz returns to turf and state breds for Barry A. while adding Nakatani. Pretty Much another getting back to restricted company..
