Day ‘ends well’ with closeout scores at Santa Anita

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

Turfway’s biggest spring day provided excellent entertainment early Saturday, with Motion/Team Valor reprise of the Spiral with a developing colt in End the Day Well. Later, the afternoon indeed ended well at Santa Anita with a substantial nightcap exotics hit and modest $143 P4. The 4 runners in the 10th under even money Baffert returnee Solar Rocket were all there for the exotics sweep including the $563 triple and $4,047 super thanks to 17-1 Zombyslayermrdrcy and 47-1 Breakmark. Playing those in the Hi-5 had potential to produce a pool scoop too as there is a $48k C/O in the wager for Sunday.

The quad action earlier in the day at Turfway was left wanting thanks to my completely wrong opinion on Fred Seitz’ Rushaway winner Flashy Dancer. My thoughts that he was inappropriate for the spot at a short price was hazardous to both P4 plays, but I did catch a healthy $260 triple in the tricky Hansel when Hogy blew the field apart off the turn. The three tabs with him also produced the $868 super.

Hope everybody got something good out of the action. Minimal excitement from me for Sunday though I may come back with some thoughts on the Sunland action. My Aqueduct P4 look below and Gus offers Gulfstream & Hawthorne opinions as well..

8th: NY-MSW, F&M-3+, 1m (DD, Super)

Though the rest of the sequence is kind of humdrum, this event has plenty of intrigue. If you don’t play the multis, you may want to play this. Yes Sugar Beach (5-1) has had plenty of chances, but her race on the AQU main track in November wins here. Meanwhile, Grunge Girl (8-1) moves into clever barn and Goldie’s Reward (12-1) makes first start at 3 for excellent layoff outfit….

Best Value: #4 Sugar Beach 5-1 3rd
Next Best: #1 Stray Bullet 5-2 4th
Exotics Use: #6 Grunge Girl 8-1 2nd
Super Add: #2 Goldie’s Reward 12-1 8th

10th: 41st Spiral (G3), 3yo, 9f (P3, DD, Super, Super Hi-5)

This $500k No. KY meet standard produced Animal Kingdom a year ago and draws an oddball assembly for this edition that sees the top ML choices (Heavy Breathing, Went the Day Well, Handsome Mike) all underlaid. Maker was thoroughly unhappy with John McKee’s decisions on Mr. Prankster in the Battaglia and gains Napravnik for this. We won’t get 12-1, but he’s the right horse to work around at what will almost certainly be an overlay tote. Will swing for fences with a host of prices. On an ATR note, well wishes go out to Johnny D. and his partners with Ill Conceived!

Good looking set of maidens coming down the hill. Some firsters here are likely OK, but they are hard to take when those that have started appear solid..

Three-turners on main track typically curious and this is no exception as top three favorites don’t look any better than the next four choices. As I said yesterday on ATR, reformed $16k claimer Graeme Crackerjack is a new horse since turning 4 and no reason not to expect as good or better here. Was hoping for better than 6-1, but it’s tough to put one by Jon White’s sharp linemaking..

Best Value: #2 Graeme Crackerjack 6-1 5th
Next Best: #8 Dynamic Host 8-1 WON ($13.00)

Super Add: #3 Skipshot 4-1 3rd

This impossible MSW down the hill is brutally positioned in the sequence. Wide open. Pedigree mentions include Indicator (Half to Brother Derek) and Turn On the pumps (Half to Cost of Freedom). Early SCR of #2 Silver Dragon means #13 Soi Phet — who’s eligible for laurels — gets to participate. On a humorous note is the moniker of #5 Pork Chop, a nickname widely employed around barns for agreeable workmates of good horses..
