POST-SCRATCHES

6th: Oceanside-R, 3yo, 1m-T (P3, DD)

Blingo is an underlaid 3-1 fave here and needs a spirited pace battle up front to win. Boat Trip the horse to beat from my perspective and there’s no harm in trying to knock him off too. Sadler explained on ATR that You Know I Know will opt for easier spot leaving barnmate Koast as his representative, but stretchout a big question mark at low tote. Midnight Crooner was a horse that really looked good breaking his maiden at Golden Gate and timing is right for him to take step forward..

Best Value: #3 Midnight Crooner 4-1 WON ($10.20)
Next Best: #6 Boat Trip 7-2 5th

Giant Steps still seems sharp, moves to barn that’s great with new acquisitions, gets 5-9#’s from field and is 8-1..

Best Value: #5 Giant Steps 8-1 6th
Next Best: #8 Valkyrie Missle 3-1 DNF
Exotics Use: #12 Bet On Victor 9-2 3rd
Super Add: #1 Gold Medallion 20-1 4th

This division being billed as coming out party for Holy Candy. Full sib Holloween Candy — campaigned by Mark Verge — won 5x and was plenty OK on turf. 7-5 not too pleasing but may end up being more than appropriate..

Most Likely: #9 Holy Candy 7-5 DNF
Best Value: #5 My Best Brother 5-1 WON ($14.00)

Sat. sees big efforts, big upsets; $62k BEL C/O Sun.

Sunday, July 8th, 2012

Two top sprinters fell Saturday with the undefeated Agave Kiss off the board after stopping in the Victory Ride and Trinniberg being nipped in a knockdown-dragout with Fort Loudon in the Carry Back. Interestingly, there was nothing to indicate that Agave Kiss would fail to fire and a number of red flags about Trinniberg with the Barbhoos extremely hesitant to enter the Summit events. Yet Agave Kiss was dull and Trinniberg ran a quality follow-up to his 106 Beyer Woody Stephens as he and Fort Loudon rang up 104 BSF’s in their duel.

Using Fort Loudon with Trinniberg wasn’t a stretch, but even if you wanted to protect against a faulter by Agave Kiss, finding Allen Jerkens’ 39-1 Emma’s Encore was no small feat. She was working very well for her first start since May 16 and had picked up the pieces of a pace collapse going 6f in her last win, but projecting a 20 point fig jump — an 8 length improvement on the Beyer scale — was dicey. Hats off to Caton Bredar who tabbed her on Saturday’s ‘Down the Stretch’.

In the Suburban, Kathy Ritvo had Mucho Macho Man tuned up beautifully and Mike Smith quietly guided him to an impressive win against a group that left panting in his wake. His 108 Beyer was a career best and sets him up nicely for a run at laurels during the second half of the year. The other 4yo’s in the race — To Honor and Serve, Stay Thirsty and Buffum — were simply embarrassed by their counterpart, beaten a dozen plus lengths. Trickmeister set serious fractions and stayed on for third. while Hymm Book was too late on the scene and second.

Hope everybody did OK Saturday.. Another carryover at Belmont Sunday and since Tina and I don’t leave until tomorrow, it’s hard to bypass the approachable sequence.

5th: CLM, 3+, 1m-T (P6, P3, DD)

$62k P6 C/O starts here..

Difficult start to sequence with perhaps 7 here capable. Out of the Kingmambo mare Menekinko, #11 Tater Downs SCR’D is a half to Ready’s Echo (More Than Ready) and sire Badge of Silver gets plenty of turf winners himself (14%). Tricky draw but lures Castellano, who could have ridden 5-2 Sr. Henry, for NY bow. Pedigree buffs may like to note that Kind Regards, dropping, stretching out and moving to the grass for Schosberg, happens to be the older brother of Grace Hall..

Most Likely: #9 Sr. Henry 5-2 5th
Best Value: #2 Slews Big Finale 8-1 8th
Next Best: #1 Beckham Bend 7-2 4th
Exotics Use: #8 Shalangar 10-1 3rd

7th: S/HCP, 3+, 6f-T (P4, P3, DD)

Fun race. 2-1 Cactus Son SCR’D has run against many better known turf sprinters of late and may simply outclass these. But there are plenty involved that are capable, in form or with advantageous karma including 10-1 Orsonian going to Rudy off the claim..

Best Value: #3 Orsonian 10-1 5th
Next Best: #7 Freudian Dilemma 15-1 3rd
Exotics Use: #5 Maui Mark 5-2 WON ($6.70)

SCR #3 Back Room Deal who ran Saturday..

Nothing original with Mott dropper Darwin Award as top tab, but I’ve been waiting for Barnards Galaxy to accomplish something for 2 months and return to sprinting and open $25k maidens may help. My man Sciacca has been trying to get Star Walk on to the turf the last 6 weeks and with good reason, as he’s a half to the accomplished turf sprinter Tahoe Warrior..

Most Likely: #4 Darwin Award 3-1 WON ($3.60)

Best Value: #6 Star Walk 30-1 5th

Exotics Use: #4 Fontley 2-1
Super Add: #2 La Cloche 7-2 WON ($9.80)

Tricky finish if you get this far in the P6. #10 Downhill Joey — out of a Kris S. mare — moves to the grass and drops off the claim for Pletcher-Repole. Won’t be 6-1. #2 Hey Babe should get a nice stalking trip under Napravnik..

Most Likely: #10 Downhill Joey 6-1 8th

Conso in C/O try; Suburban, Summit key big Saturday

Saturday, July 7th, 2012

There were two tricky horses to find in Friday’s Belmont Double Carryover P6, $25.20 Mary P. Jones in the 5th and $12.80 Special Skills in the 6th. I tabbed both as Best Value runners but only used the 2nd choice former on the ticket. Special Skills, from ever dangerous Alan Goldberg, was a first time starter and I leaned on the 2 in the race that had already run. Got back the investment on the conso anyway and it was a fun afternoon. Hope everyone did well. Chance that New York cancels due to the heat. Here’s a look at the BEL P4 and Summit of Speed at Calder before the wife and I head to Quebec for a few days..

POST-SCRATCHES

7th: NY-ALW/N1X, 3+, 8.5f-IT (P4, P3, DD)

Some tough decisions to make regarding the many stretchout runners that are signed on here. You have to figure at least one if them is going to take to the added distance..

Most Likely: #2 Adirondack Dancer 5-1 WON ($7.30)
Best Value: #7 Gossip Column 8-1 2nd
Next Best: #11 Carbon County 7-2 3rd
Exotics Use: #8 Wild Exploit 4-1 5th

8th: 10th Victory Ride (G3), 3yo-F, 6f (P3, DD)

Agave Kiss is the least-known undefeated horse in the world. She’s not Frankel, but she’s pretty darn nice. You get the feeling this will be a real test for her breaking from inside and with virtually all but Sea Island looking like pace pressure. Because of that scenario, it is Sea Island that offers value as the likely upsetter should the 6-for-6 Lion Heart filly faulter. Worth at least back-up P3/P4 plays as insurance..

Most Likely: #1 Agave Kiss 2-5 5th
Best Value: #6 Sea Island 10-1 4th
Next Best: #5 Gypsy Robin 5-1 6th
Exotics Use: #3 Jamaican Smoke 6-1 2nd

9th: 126th Suburban H. (G2), 3+, 9f (DD)

Outstanding cast for this historic race and it sure feels like there will be an honest if not spirited pace on with Trickmeister leading the parade. Of course when you get that scenario, it’s often a recipe for riders looking at each other out of the gate with no one moving. To Honor and Serve too short a number to warmly embrace and am inclined to stay the course with Hymm Book whose rally has fallen short in last two. Need to cover several bases to get through this in the multis though and that includes Pletcher-Repole pair and resurgent Buffum..

Belmont P6 C/O swells to 2nd day, $195k..

Friday, July 6th, 2012

P6 at Belmont went un-hit a 2nd day Thursday and Friday’s sequence, part of a twilight slate that kicks off at 3:00pm, features 4 maiden specials that are plenty treacherous. In addition to the diploma events, the featured Chasin’ Wimmin’ is a maddeningly deep dash for NY-bred 3+. The sextet ends with a CLM/N2L. Should be a fun afternoon ahead of a big Saturday that includes the Suburban at Belmont, Summit of Speed at Calder and Hollywood Gold Cup..

POST-SCRATCHES

4th: MSW, F&M-3+, 8.5f (P6, P3, DD)

$195k C/O starts here..

Interesting filly group to start things with Albertrani-KMc sending an even money pair of Darleys. Dance Card debuted nicely for McLaughlin in May and the full brother of Tempted to Tapit is the preferred partner stretching out 300 yards. Tom A’s Centring is a homebred daughter of MG1W Composure by A.P. Indy who is returning to the oval after a 642 day absence. The most likely upsetter here is Angel Penna with 2nd time starting stretchout Bazooka Babe who gets Lasix and headgear for the first time. The Adena Springs homebred by Holy Bull is out of the Caro-IRE mare Cargo, making her a half to Red Bullet. Bruce Brown doesn’t typically have runners ready first out and The Giant’s Beauty has taken a while to get to the races. But the NY bred is worth noting being out of Al Fried’s Moonlightandbeauty by Giant’s Causeway, making her a full brother to nifty MSW Giant Moon. Allen Jerkens takes over on Hilda’s Legacy who has made 6 starts since 12/3/11 on Woodbine poly and grass. Being by Airdrie sire Istan, she has every right to be better on an authentic main track. For pedigree players, Istan, who has 2 crops out, has proven himself a particularly good sire of wet track runners..

Most Likely: #1e Darley entry 1-1 WON ($2.40)/2nd
Best Value: #3 Bazooka Babe 8-1 8th
Next Best: #4 Holiday’s Jewel 5-2 4th (3rd for wagering)
Exotics Use: #7 Hilda’s Legacy 12-1 3rd (2nd for wagering)

5th: NY-MSW, F&M-3+, 7f-T (G/S, P3, DD)

This is one of the races that could make the P6 ‘squirelly’. Stock Fund is your 9-5 fave but 0-13 including runner-up finishes in her last three. Carlos Martin reaches for Castellano in an attempt to get her over the top. Jose Espinoza had been on Stock Fund but moves to 15-1 Mary P. Jones for Kathleen Feron who won Wednesday with 26-1 Monticello Doll, another homebred from the late John Hettinger (Akindale Farm). After that, Dale Romans’ Temper in Command gets 1st turf in 2nd start and sire Master Command has been getting lawn winners (23%). Barclay Tagg introduces King Cugat daughter Mary Ann’s Kitchen who scorched a Best of 71 half mile (:47.0) in final prep for this..

Most Likely: #1 Stock Fund 9-5 2nd
Best Value: #10 Mary P. Jones 15-1 WON ($25.20)
Next Best: #8 Temper in Command 6-1 4th
Exotics Use: #2 Mary Ann’s Kitchen 12-1 8th

6th: MSW, 2yo, 6f-IT (P4, P3, DD)

Baby event features a number of known sibling entities including Clement’s Copper Beeches (Big Brown), a half to Middlesex Drive (Pine Bluff), Asmussen’s Lemon Drop Dream (Lemon Drop Kid), a half to Denomination (Smart Strike), Goldberg’s Special Skills (Bernstein), a half to Economic Swoon (Malibu Moon), Ward’s Redwood Kitten (Kitten’s Joy), full to Artemus Kitten and Breen’s Bye Bye Bernie (Bernstein), a half to stablemate Smoldering Beauty (Smoke Glacken) who broke her maiden for the Halls on the Pimlico Special undercard with an 89 Beyer. McLaughlin has Shadwell product Qeyaas starting his career and he is worth looking at as one of just a handful of U.S. runners for Haafhd, who stands for Sh. Hamdam in the UK. Qeyaas second dam is Height of Fashion, already known in the shed for dropping Derby-2,000 Guinneas-Eclipse winner Nashwan and herself the 1981 2yo Champion filly in England..

Most Likely: #1a Redwood Kitten 3-1 5th

Exotics Use: #3 Lucky My Way 4-1 6th

8th: NY-Chasin’ Wimmin’, 3+, 6f (DD)

Raise your hand if you recall the namesake of this test, a Sy Cohn homebred by Belong to Me trained by John Hertler that won more than $400k in a 42/7-6-7 career. Chasin’ Wimmin’, ridden regularly by Jean-Luc Samyn, knocked heads with Say Florida Sandy, Intidab, Pebo’s Guy, Stalwart Member and the like between 1998-2002. The stake is perfectly named because this group — featuring Uncle T Seven, Be Bullish, Mine Over Matter, Law Enforcement, Driven by Success, etc. — are cut fully from the cloth of Chasin’ Wimmin’. The 8 NY-bred runners here are a combined 238/51-48-38 for earnings of $3,281,000, an average career record of 30/6-6-5 ($410k)..

Some quality pedigrees signed on and certainly the group of firsters starts with Pletcher-Robsham’s Sweet N Discreet (6-5), a full sis to Discreet Dancer and half to Travelin Man. But there’s plenty of other prospects here based on heritage including Clement’s Native One, by win-early sire Indian Charlie and a half to stakes winners Banker’s Buy (Distorted Humor), Glacken’s Gal (Smoke Glacken), City Dweller (Carson City). Must overcome inside post but this is 5f and sharp break puts her in plus position. The value and the pick.

Dutrow-Jay Em Ess entry (by Hard Spun & Tapit) could be potent no matter which of the pair Rick sends with Ramon. Albertrani brings first Nobiz Like Shobiz I’m seeing to the fray, a true top/bottom homebred from Mrs. Valando given she authored the pages of the sire and dam herself. Zito adds Distortion SCR’D to this heady group, a Distorted Humor chestnut out of 3x stake winner Misty Rosette who exchanged decisions with Swap Fliparoo in 2006, dusting her in the G3 Old Hat for Jim Chapman before finishing behind her in the G1 Test..

ATR listeners got great insight from Andy Serling Tuesday about the kind of horse to consider as a price play in a race like this. Andy will use the Green Hills homebred #10 Voodoo Storm (10-1) with favored Compliance Officer because the McGaughey trainee has been much better in his return to the grass as a 4yo and looks to have upside yet. By Storm Cat, the colt is out of the truly outstanding Voodoo Dancer (Kingmambo) who won more than she lost for Clement (21/11-4-2; $1.4MM) and counted the Diana, Garden City, Palomar and Beverly Hills among her 7 graded stakes victories. Voodoo Storm was a little slow at 2 and through most of his 3yo season, but began to improve later in the year and turned the corner at Keeneland in April with a grass ALW score. The late runner missed rallying late here 5/13 under Leparoux and get Rosario today in a spot where the pace up front should be no less than solid..

Most Likely: #1 Compliance Officer 5-2 2nd
