Not a perfect day, but big comeback mounted

Monday, August 27th, 2012

In a day of mixed emotions thanks to Spondulix getting injured in a strange gate mishap, was able to enjoy a big snapback Sunday after taking a beating Saturday. Maylan Studart, of all people, helped make Sunday a major success with a determined ride on 32-1 Recharged in the 8th. While top tab Screenplay was a clear winner up front under Wilmer Garcia, Studart gave Recharged a patient, ground-saving, midpack stalking trip and then rode hard to the wire to just get past Sr. Henry. The resulting $249.50 exacta cleaned up all of the Travers Day spillage and then some.

Mike Welsch’s Workout Notes in the DRF helped get the day going, producing the $141.50 2nd race exacta on the strength of his endorsements of Sign and Honor Bright. Sign’s $22.00 win tote helped drive a good $252.00 early P4 as well. The surprise in the Personal Ensign really hadn’t settled in when my own attention turned to Dee Tee’s Spondulix debuting in the 11th. With everything seemingly perfect and the grey gelding in the gate, Irad Ortiz off his back and sudden commotion around Spondulix indicated a problem. He had kicked back with his right leg and somehow got it caught through the stall doors. He suffered lacerations around the hock and was immediately scratched. While I didn’t expect thefirst timer to win, it was certainly not the way I envisioned the fun afternoon ending. He’s only bruised up a little however and will be ready to get hois career underway pretty quick.

Lots to discuss from Del Mar’s Pacific Classic Day and the carryover sequence as well, but I’ll have to save it for ATR as the Monday Spa slate — with a $72k carryover — needs to be produced… Hope everyone had a great Sunday and super weekend!

Travers Day bashes bank; Big Sunday ahead

Sunday, August 26th, 2012

147th Travers produced a once-in-a-century result Saturday with the dead heat between Golden Ticket & Alpha providing the day an extra added jolt of excitement and wonder. Lots more to say but late getting things out today so I’ll save it for tomorrow on air and in print. Was a fun afternoon at the Old Spa, but I had a poor day at the windows getting smacked around for -$500+. Look to get it back and more today! Pacific Classic card and $570k 2-day P6 C/O at Del Mar along with Royal Delta/It’s Tricky — and Spondulix in the nightcap — at Saratoga. Hope you did OK Saturday and that my miscues didn’t bury you..

Delighted to send Dee Tee’s first grey runner postward here as Spondulix makes his debut. Has worked well toward this and really raised his game when moving to the lawn for most recent drill. Proviso for this spot is distance, as he has indicated that middle distance will be his ideal trip. It’s not the toughest looking bunch of coconuts you’ll see, so with a clean break he could have a real shot at a share or more. Fair Trade and the 3 perched on the AE list are the ones to fear..

Ballerina a prelude to big Travers Weekend

Friday, August 24th, 2012

After making something out of modest mutuels Wednesday, could not find the right prices to hook up with the overwhelming parade of logicals Thursday. So despite cashing a number of tickets, no money was made. You know it’s a short-armed afternoon when hitting the P4 costs you $25… Meanwhile at DMR, one winner negotiated the carryover sequence for a $482,000 score. Nice.. Hope everyone did OK. Plus returns grinding it out to start Travers Week

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012

Enjoyed a highly productive Wednesday to start Travers Week as several price players blended smoothly with mundane types to produce nice returns. In the opener for instance, 8-1 Sandy’z Slew split 2nd and 3rd betting choices Meet the Mets and Saint Arthur to generate an incredibly generous $72 (per $1) 6-horse field triple. Similarly, 7-1 Ziptronic ran a big race in the 2nd just missing behind favored Jess Not Jesse and ahead of 2nd choice Evacuation Route for a $57.25 trio.

With a good day well under way, the Pletcher-Wertheimer Smart Strike colt Colony Strike — a Best Value play at 8-1 on the ML — inexplicably floated to an outlandish 14-1 and held sway for a $30.60 tote that keyed a $313.50 tri with the 2nd and 3rd choices. Though the $400+ P4 didn’t fall into place when Ralph Nicks’ Krissy Kat and Jonathon Sheppard’s Warm Hugs got by Race Palace in the nightcap, it was still a rather strong afternoon of play.

As a sidebar, Krissy Kat should certainly have been the subject of a steward’s examination for drifting out several paths on the runner up in the finale. As Andy Serling has delineated for an extended period during ATR visits, the refusal of the judges to concern themselves with this type of equine bullying has gone well beyond frustrating overlooked infraction and into the realm of major issue. Although we’ve discussed it before, I’ll again take up the ‘herding’ issue with Rich Migliore and Tony Black on the show.

Hope everybody did well Wednesday! A very welcome 9 race slate Thursday ahead of the big Ballerina-Travers-Personal Ensign Weekend. $90k P6 C/O at Del Mar today too…
