Very nice little stake and super competitive. Kiss in the Forest, Heaven Knows What, Sweet Cat and Somasuch found a common opponent in Tim Salzman’s very sharp turf sprinter Sensible Lady when mixing it up in the Coronation Cup at SAR or in the case of Somasuch, the Jenny Wade at PEN. Somasuch SCRATCHED will need to run her best yet to impact this, but is within range of the top choices and may get the set up she needs. Choice of Alan Garcia suits filly’s style and the price will be right..

1st fall Saturday leaves $40k C/O at BEL

Sunday, September 9th, 2012

Fun, eclectic day of racing Saturday with wide variety of stakes action providing a number of interesting results. Arguably the most important performance of the day came from Groupie Doll who returned in the G2 Presque Isle Masters and could not have looked better in a facile win over 10 others. Buff and Fred Bradley’s bruising Bowman’s Band filly launched her rally midway on the backstretch and smoothly inhailed half a dozen foes before confronting It’s Me Mom at the top of the stretch and drawing off to a 3+ length win in a sharp 1:16.1 over the Erie Tapeta. She earned a 95 Beyer for the comeback effort and after a stop at Keeneland, should be perfectly tuned for a Breeders’ Cup F&M Sprint or down the hill Turf Sprint try. Considering that the top 3 finishers were 7th-9th-8th after the opening quarter and 5th-8th-6th after a half, It’s Me Mom ran some race to be 4th beaten 2 long necks for 2nd.

Meanwhile, results of the day’s P4 action was wholly unproductive with various manner of miscues derailing the plays. The summer’s quixotic Saratoga results invaded opening day at Belmont with some tough to find winners producing a $40k carryover for Sunday. Highlights of the day at Elmont included Sean Avery returning a winner of the overnight Affiliate S., Air Support taking the Bowling Green under a tactful John Velazquez and Tizracer dusting the anticipated MSW while earning a 92 Beyer.

At Arlington and Louisiana Downs, whiffs in single legs — the Unbridled at LaD and Lassie at AP — prevented quad bingos. Bourbon Courage gave Kellyn Gorder the first graded stakes win of his training career with a thoroughly dominating performance in the Super Derby that earned a 94 Beyer. Gorder, whose previous top stakes performer had been MSP Travel Advisory, has done nice work converting Bourbon Courage, a $15k F-T July yearling by Lion Heart, away from being a one dimensional speedball.

The Empire-bred Hettinger (Hessonite v. Gitchee Goomee!) and Ashley Cole anchor the solid sequence at Belmont and note a $63k C/O at Fairplex. Hope you did OK Saturday…

Yes Nine Loves ran a big race in her debut, but Dominic Galluscio wouldn’t have run her at the bottom if she was any kind of horse. The added fact that she sat out all of July off the claim and subsequently returned with a decidedly shoddy worktab spells trouble to me. Englehart eminently capable, but I have my doubts about the 9-5 ML fave..

New season offers intriguing sequences

Saturday, September 8th, 2012

With the Breeders’ Cup now clear on the horizon, the transition from summer to fall starts this weekend with Belmont, Fairplex and Kentucky Downs/Turfway taking over from Saratoga, Del Mar and Ellis Park. Fun stakes sequences at Louisiana Downs and Arlington add to the action as well. Should be a fun, circuit-switching kind of afternoon. Don’t forget the Presque Isle Masters at 7:30p ET as well…

Del Mar ends great summer with final C/O

Wednesday, September 5th, 2012

An outstanding horseplayer summer comes to a complete end Wednesday with Del Mar’s meet finale. As much fun as Saratoga was the past 7 weeks, the action at the seaside oval has been equally compelling and it was only fitting that this particular stand close with yet one ultimate carryover sequence. The pool starts with $194k and it won’t surprise if the challenging skein generates a total pot of $2 million. Though I officially ended the Spa season down about $1,400 after some aggressive swings at meet’s end, I guess I can take another shot and include today’s California play into the tally with Del Mar’s 2012 action having contributed positively to the summer’s overall results.

No matter how any of us did at the windows, the success of the summer seasons at SAR, DMR, AP, MTH and ELP, as indicated by enthusiastic attendance and handle figures, flies in the face of the non-stop brickbatting by the sport’s critics. Based on the overwhelmingly positive atmospheres reported by patrons around the country this summer, you have to wonder if the doomsayers actually ever go to a racetrack or ever bet. People that seriously play or casually enjoy horse racing wouldn’t have time or inclination to negatively spin every racing story that appears on the internet, but the ones that do paint a portrait of a failing sport which the realities completely belie.

Hope you had a great summer and take down a piece of the Del Mar closing day jackpot..

POST-SCRATCHES

5th: 1st Oak Tree Juvenile Turf, 2yo, 1m-T (P6, P3, D)

$194k ‘must distribute’ P6 C/O starts here..

Very well-matched and well-connected juveniles with assortment of styles, levels of experience and upside. Even the Biancone filly (who Leparoux comes in to ride) and the 4 maidens have potential for pay slots. One glaring element to the cast is a slight dearth of speed and that gives Bonde’s Caballo Del Cielo or Baffert’s Rolling Fog a chance at thievery. Terrific end to the La Jolla stakes schedule..

Another wonderful Saratoga summer ends..

Monday, September 3rd, 2012

Another great Saratoga summer comes to an end today and as usual, it brings with it a degree of melancholy. But the finite nature of the Spa stand is what makes the time here special, so you can only appreciate the season’s closing the same way you anticipate its’ renewal. With a degree of uncertainty — and dread — in the air regarding the state’s unwelcome interloping into the sport’s most important circuit, you have to hope that when we assemble here in 45 weeks we are able to recognize the place we all love so much. It’s been a challenging meet that had thrilling highs and maddening lows. One more appropriately difficult slate of races this Labor Day… I hope you’ve enjoyed the Saratoga stand as much as I have presenting it here and on ATR and come away enriched in one form or another!
