One of the day’s more intriguing groups with well connected first turf players Battle Hardened and Hon. de Leon drawn inside and any number of considerations sprinkled throughout. Tough way to end the early P4 and start the carryover sequence. I loved Battle Hardened back at the begining of the year and recall talking to Kenneally about when he would ultimately go green and today’s the day..

Best Value: #1 Battle Hardened 12-1 9th

Not so sure this is run on the oval like it draws up on paper. For austerity purposes in the P4/P6, you have to hope the winner comes from the top pair. Barclay Tagg winless streak dates back to June 16, an 0/47 run, but Ya Gotta Have Soul caught my eye as a 15-1 (or more) flyer having drilled 6 times since solid try upstate behind freight train Dominus..

Most Likely: #4 Bellamy Brew 8-5 3rd
Next Best: #6 Associate 3-1 WON ($6.90)
Best Value: #2 Ya Gotta Have Soul 15-1 6th
Exotics Use: #8 Beautyinthepulpit 10-1 5th

9th: 19th Gallant Bloom (G3), F&M-3+, 6.5f (DD)

Again, if you’re involved in the P6, you need one of the two overwhelming favorites to come through because while Musical Romance and Turbulent Descent aren’t 100% guaranteed to produce the winner, there’s no glaring price opportunity screaming ‘Bet me!’ either..

Most Likely: #9 Musical Romance 5-2 3rd
Next Best: #10 Turbulent Descent 9-5 4th
Best Value: #3 Dust and Diamonds 12-1 WON ($19.60)
Exotics Use: #7 Emma’s Encore 8-1 6th

Feather just Awesome; Good Friday slate at BEL

Friday, September 21st, 2012

Highlight of Thursday was Awesome Feather’s 2nd race as a 4yo, which was overwhelmingly the tender champion’s career best. The 10 for 10 filly will face an ultimate challenge in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, but will arrive there as a far more imposing presence than many imagined before this impressive performance. Chad Brown sounded supremely confident on ATR Monday discussing the way the Stronach miss was coming up to Thursday’s try and he and his team deserve tremendous credit for their careful, dilligent handling of her. Her status will help make the Friday of Breeders’ Cup that much more appealing.

Nice 7th-9th P3 and double linking Big Business & Pianist helped carry Thursday’s Belmont action, though I’m still not sure why I short-armed the P4 try which cost the solid $240 tote. Hope everyone did well. Was rooting for a carryover for Friday, so having purloined a glance at the 4th-9th, here’s some action..

‘Solar’ the one to beat, Karakorum Legend the preferable side of the Rice entry and Gimme Credit in dangerous hands, but that doesn’t preclude you from reaching for value players. First time 5yo Sky Blue Pink (15-1), cutback candidate Fourseventeen (8-1), board regular Hear the Footsteps (6-1), plucky Barrel of Love (10-1) and mutuel stalwart Isn’tlovejustgrand (15-1) all catch the eye as exotics candidates..

Hard to be thrilled embracing Yes It’s Pink and Jennys Creek as your P6 survivor players, but next set of logicals & upset candidates (Flirtatious Spring, Fujiana, The Giant’s Beauty & Clever Spirit) are all suspect in their own ways. Would think Al Fried’s The Giant’s Beauty (full to Giant Moon) can put it all together getting on lawn and with Bruce Brown off sharply downstate, but “0/40 1st Turf” a bit alarming..

Forte Dei Marmi (8-1) and Scalo (2-1) start the discussion noting they exit the Sky Classic (1st & 3rd respectively) from which runner-up Stormy Lord won the incident-marred President’s Cup Saturday at Philly. Wigmore Hall (6-1) is back to defend his ’11 Northern Dancer utilizing the same path out of an Arlington Million chance that was quashed by Little Mike’s theivery. Irish Mission (10-1) faces male elders here having distinguished herself in the Canadian Triple Crown with a Breeders win and Queens’ Plate placement. Conversations have suggested that Wise Dan freaked on the off going in the Fourstardave and that he is possibly vulnerable here. Not much question that he’s best over synthetics, but anything near his ‘good’ turf efforts looks passable at the least.
