Bi-coastal C/O’s pepper big Saturday stakes slates

Saturday, September 29th, 2012

Santa Anita weathered their opener Friday which unfortunately included a horse and Raphael Bejarano going down and the main track producing one speed-assisted winner after another. Will be interesting to see how surface plays during the first half of Saturday’s important card. Bejarano refused a hospital visit and should be good to ride. Just a Mirage wasn’t as lucky. First time lawn Unbridled’s Note won the downhill Eddie D. feature like a grizzled turfer and positioned himself nicely for a Breeders’ Cup try. He also further demonstrated that Julien Leparoux still has no excuse for not winning the King’s Bishop with him last month. Bejarano’s spill cost him the mount on my ‘Best Bet’ No Silent, who with Quinonez aboard could not surpress inside rallyer Sweet Swap in the first leg of the late P4. Strung the next 3 winners together and was kicking myself for missing the skein-starter when the .50 quad returned a stunning $698. The parlay for the $8.80, $6.40, $8.00 & $16.80 was just $236! Smallish (for California) carryover of $55k into the big Cup Preview card. New York resumes with a $97k C/O of its’ own for the Jockey Club Gold Cup slate. Dr. Scott Palmer, fresh from Friday’s NY Task Force presentation, and Steve Crist join Seth Merrow and me today on “Loose on the Lead”. Ch. 12 in the Capital District and streaming at www.capitalotb.com..

Santa Anita Cup meet opener honors Eddie D.

Friday, September 28th, 2012

Fun afternoon at Belmont and another day where winners were tougher to string together than to identify. Monster P3 linking Chief Gaga, Shootdeworx and Fava to end the card tripped a double carryover of nearly $100k that will go to Saturday with today’s cancellation protecting the track for the vastly important slate ahead. Santa Anita opens this afternoon and the first Eddie D. (former Morvich) anchors a good kickoff to the meet that will culminate with the Breeders’ Cup.

Lonesome Glory, $26k C/O highlight Thursday

Thursday, September 27th, 2012

Nice day of racing Wednesday at Belmont ended frustratingly as I missed $1,040 P4 having left 4th choice Serpe winner off the play. Miscue was made more at the top as I was mistakenly concerned that Goldberg layoff returnee Hermosura could come back running. White Sangria was well worth singling which not only allows Fly Ride to make it aboard, but lowers the ducat price to $50. Arrgh.

The rest of the day was rather formful with a couple of Chad Brown MSW winners notable including the good debut effort of Trinniberg full sister Ostourah. The filly drew off from what felt like a decent group as concerns regarding her bow coming on the lawn proved unfounded. Later, Guilt Trip outgamed ‘first time Mike Mariena’ Tuckers Point at the wire after a mile-long duel that saw the pair earn solid 84 Beyers.

The late double with $14 Forever Vow and $24 Fly Ride tripped a carryover into Thursday of $26k. Those 6 races and a look at the Steeplechase early double which features the NSA-G1 Lonesome Glory below..

Philly thrillers, upsets highlight Saturday’s action

Sunday, September 23rd, 2012

Saturday action featured its’ share of outstanding racing highlighted by the intense Cotillion duel between My Miss Aurelia and Questing that saw the Asmussen filly remain undefeated. Corey Nakatani has enjoyed a career revival over the past year and his terrific ride aboard the 2011 Juvenile Filly Champion made the difference over the Alabama sensation and Irad Ortiz. My Miss Aurelia’s win further enhances what appears to be shaping up as an epic Breeders’ Cup Distaff given her unbeaten status to go along with that of Awesome Feather. Fold in Royal Delta, It’s Tricky (F&M Sprint?), Love and Pride, Include Me Out, et al, and you have the makings of a tremendous cap to Friday’s Cup.

If you wagered which $1,000,000 stake Irad Ortiz would win Saturday, you certainly were more likely to say the Cotillion. But Handsome Mike, whom both Ed DeRosa and Steve Haskin lauded as live on ATR, finally broke through in a big spot to annex the Pennsylvania Derby under Ortiz. The result flip-flipped the outcome of the Cotillion jockey-wise with Macho Macho running an odd race under Nakatani.

I was interested enough in Handome Mike to use him as Best Value 3rd choice under Macho Macho and Alpha, but the surprise of the Philly stake sequence that quashed the quad play came an hour earlier in the Gallant Bob when Ben Perkins Jr. stunned with steadily improving Well Spelled. The G3 Jersey Shore winner, who toted a Parx ALW victory from the spring into the event, has run poorly just once in his 11 career starts, a forgiveable try over the Tapeta at Presque Isle in the Tom Ridge. He undoubtedly received a big set up from the early licks of Il Villano, Private Zone and Trinniberg (:21.2, :43.4, :56.2), but to his credit was the only horse besides Trinniberg that was running late. Including the $50k son of Spellbinder in the P4 with Alphabet Soup photo winner Philly Ace and the $1,000,000 race heroes returned $1,300 for the .50 punt.

At Belmont, Dust and Diamonds didn’t need the lead to win the G2 Gallant Bloom for Satish Sanan as the Padua homebred earned an all-expenses paid BC F&M Sprint start. At DelPark, Optimizer hounded Excaper and then drew away from him late in the Kent to give Bluegrass Hall’s Brad Kelley and Wayne Lukas an elusive graded stakes win for the homebred English Channel bay. ATR listeners may have glommed the big $610 triple utilizing Mike Beer’s opinion that 39-1 Two Months Rent was playable and that Optimizer was the horse-to-beat. Late Saturday at Charles Town, Book Review indeed snapped back from what I termed the ‘too bad to be believed’ Test and scored in the rich Oaks as the 3-2 favorite. Holiday Soiree, whom Beer and I liked as a price inclusion, was 2nd at 18-1 to boost the exotics.

Fun day of racing all around.. Hope everyone did well! Just a little P4 tinker at Belmont for Sunday.
