HOL C/O too tricky; $24k AQU pot starts Saturday

Saturday, December 15th, 2012

Identified all the winners in the HollyPark P6 Friday, but stringing them together proved tricky. Defrayed expenses with late P4 hit which was nice. Fun sequence. Hope everyone did well! Carryover in New York on interesting, challenging card and more Inglewood action Saturday..

POST-SCRATCHES

2nd: MSW, 2yo, 1m-70y (P4, P3, DD)

One of the days most anticipated MDN events with Long River, Darley homebred son out of (“o/o”) Round Pond returning from the same two races that produced Mudflats (90 Beyer) last week. The other half of the entry, Incognito, happens to be o/o the terrific MG1W Octave who went 13/4-7-2 in 2006-07 for Starlight and Todd Pletcher. Octave won the Mother Goose & CCAO, was second in the KY Oaks, BC Juvenile Fillies, Ashland, Cotillion, Matron and FG Oaks and was third behind Ginger Punch and Hysterical Lady in the BC Distaff at Monmouth, closing from far back on the sloppy track..

7th: Sarcastic, 3yo-F, 1m-70y (P3, DD)

Slightly obscure choice for a stake name, though the Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons-trained Sarcastic was a solid Phipps Family citizen in 1959-61 winning the Gazelle at 3 and setting a track record at Atlantic City as heroine in the 1961 Miss America Turf H. She died as a young broodmare, but not before dropping 1967 2yo Champion Vitriolic who won the Saratoga Special, Arlington-Washington Futurity, Champagne and Pimlico-Laurel Futurity for the senior Mr. Phipps and Eddie Neloy. Sarcastic shows up in one recognizable name from recent memory, as the 5th dam of the venerable 10yo Langfuhr gelding Fuhrever Dancing who won $670k in 89 starts including Western Canadian stakes. His career has been extended by the synthetic tracks and while turned out for the winter in Ocala, trainer Tim Hamm expects him back as an 11yo in ’13..

$44k HOL C/O opp after NY near miss

Friday, December 14th, 2012

As discussed on air Thursday, Aqueduct sequence had formful feel to it and small P6 try flirted with the more-than-decent outcome. In a way, preferred being out of running for all 6 after 3rd leg when Centrique overpowered single Elusive Jozi. It would have been an excruciating beat to get to the anchor leg and have 1/17 perfect trip recipient Summer Flick beat Salvar in deep stretch. Still, wasn’t unhappy laying out $48 with what was a square shot for $3,800 had Elusize Jozi and Salvar succeeded. Overall, a fun afternoon on Day 2 of the Big A Inner. Hope everyone did OK. Hollywood P6 carried for $43,937 into a very nice slate and there is a High 5 pot of $28,375 gloing into the 8th as well!

Those that have started appear to have edge, but of firsters, #5 Light Weight (10-1) SCR’D being by J Be K catches eye. Young first crop sire has hit with 4 of his 8 first time starters and Eddie Barker can get one ready. Sneaky inclusion and may be lost on the board. Doubt #6 Little Gabby Girl is part of today’s picture, but her dam Kawajlain sparks pleasant memories. Named by owner-breeder Phil Marcantonio for a famed Marshall Islands WWII battle site in which he participated, Kawajlain was trained by Del Carroll and broke her maiden at Saratoga under Mike Luzzi paying a fat $34.00 and keying a $200 early double. AQU DBL C/O, strong GP, HOL cards for Saturday

Saturday, December 8th, 2012

Aqueduct carryover proved unhittable Friday tripping a double pot for Saturday of more than $76k. The sequence was one of those where the winners weren’t utterly impossible, but stringing them together appropriately was as evidenced by the $1 P3’s of $416.50 (4-6), $448.00 (5-7), $157.00 (6-8) & $221.00 (7-9). The late .50 P4 returned $797.00.

One sidebar to the action Friday was watching Knock Quietly push his earnings to $128,401 finishing 2nd for the 9th time in 30 starts. The Schwartz Family’s Quiet American 4yo looked poised to go by River Tune in the final yards of the nightcap, getting his head in front for a jump, before ultimately falling short at the wire.

Besides the NY carryover pool — which is tweaked by off turf moves for the 4th, 7th and 9th — there’s a nice P5 set at Gulfstream and the Starlet/Bayakoa slate at Hollywood!

Baffert meanwhile debuts a pair for Gary and Mary West, the full brother of Zazu in Flashback, as well as Coastal Breeze, a $180k KEE ’11 yearling by Empire Maker..
