Thursday turns giant as C/O hits $540k

Thursday, September 19th, 2013

Multiple mid-priced winners and a 25-1 first time starter made the double C/O sequence at Belmont impossible to negotiate Wednesday and a three day $540k is available Thursday as a result. Let’s go!

BELMONT PARK

POST-SCRATCHES

1st: William Entenmann Mem., 4+, 18f-National Fences (P5, P3, DD)

Had hoped to get away with P5 single of Martini Brother (as part of Pape/Sheppard entry), but Clorevia Farm entry (Dr. Skip/Extraextraordinary) and improving mare Cat Feathers may need coverage..

Most Likely: #1e Sheppard entry 7-5 2nd/6th
Best Value: #4 Cat Feathers 5-1 4th
Next Best: #2e Clorevia Farm entry 3-1 5th/DNF-Fell
Exotics Use: #6 Cognashene 15-1 DNF-Fell

2nd: Lonesome Glory H. (G1), 4+, 20f-National Fences (P3, DD)

As discussed with Bill Gallo Wednesday on ATR, chases downstate are a test of stamina as opposed to upstate where the premium is on speed and agility. 2012 Championship challenger Demonstrative and ‘now horse’ Italian Wedding (POE) are the prime players here and co-horses to beat. Gustavian won last year’s Entenmann here and Hunt Ball (the ‘other’ Sheppard) gets first Lasix and should prefer the grander layout of Belmont’s hop course..

Best Value: #7 Hunt Ball 12-1 6th
Next Best: #2 Demonstrative 7-2 4th
Exotics Use: #1a (POE) Italian Wedding 2-1 3rd/7th
Super Add: #4 Gustavian 6-1 WON ($9.70)

3rd: Parlo, F&M-3+, 8.5f (P4, P3, DD)

Most Likely: #5 Street Secret 8-5 2nd
Best Value: #3 Moon Philly 6-1 4th

4th: CLM, F&M-3+, 6f (P3, DD)

Garmentos Girl takes big drop and gets advantageous pace set. Slippery group..

Most Likely: #6 Garmentos Girl 5-1 8th

Next Best: #2 Trail Walker 2-1 3rd

6th: NY-OC/N2X, F&M-3+, 7f-T (G/S, P3, DD)

Typically deep and contentious state bred turf ALW. Jitney’s upstate turf return was terrific and Saez added to equation now too. After that, use as many as you can afford..

Most Likely: #7 Jitney 4-1 (A) 4th
Best Value: #1 Double the Energy 8-1 (B) WON ($18.20)
Next Best: #2 Vicki’s Dancer 6-1 (B) 3rd

Exotics/”C’s”: #8 Ornelia 6-1 9th; #4 Neck of the Moon 3-1 2nd; #9 Palace Dreams 7-2 (C) 8th

Exotics Use: #6 Summer Shiner 3-1 (B) WON ($10.00)

8th: NY-MSW, 2yo-F, 1m-T (P3, DD)

Mysterious group of NYB babies. Stretchouts, firsters and turf debuters make this guesswork. Burndownthetown a full sis to Gitchee Goomie..

Most Likely: #5 Freud’s Sunset 5-1 (A) 2nd
Best Value: #10 Backstretch Lady 15-1 (B) 5th

BELMONT PARK

POST-SCRATCHES

1st: MSW, 2yo-F, 6f (P5, P3, DD)

Confounding 6 pack with 5 FTS from good outfits and Mott/Live Oak 2nd timer Naughtynaightygirl (Bernardini) that debuted upstate, took some money, and had some things go against her right from the break. Chad Brown sends $475k Rubindy (Bernardini), a half sis to SW Beautician & Bella Castani..

Best Value: #6 Rubindy 4-1 4th
Next Best: #5 Naughtynaughtygirl 7-2 6th
Exotics Use: #1 Sustainable 5-1 2nd

2nd: OC/N1X, F&M-3+, 6.5f (P4, P3, DD)

Nice bunch and fun wagering affair. Bridgehampton SCR’D may just wire them, but if you can get a little pressure on her, perhaps returning Single Forever (8-1) can pounce off a potentially sweet inside stalking voyage..

Best Value: #3 Single Forever 8-1 6th
Next Best: #7 Merry Meadow 4-1 2nd
Exotics Use: #1 Tanglewood Tale 5-1 WON ($11.00)
Super Add: #5 Cape Cod Carol 10-1 3rd

3rd: MCLM/$16k, F&M-3+, 1m (P3, DD)

These always have potential to turn into a staggerfest. Taylor Jagger should be fit for assignment after a summer of turf routing. An Esler/Decarlo Double? Maybe..

Best Value: #3 Taylor Jagger 5-1 WON ($8.30)
Next Best: #7 Malibu Queen 4-1 2nd
Exotics Use: #4 Flamingo Lane 3-1 4th
Super Add: #8 Lady C Note 10-1 3rd

4th: NY-MSW, F&M-3+, 1m (P3, DD)

Tricky set with a few having quality efforts somewhere in their running lines. Almost no one would be an utter shock..

Most Likely: #5 Brandini 5-1 2nd
Best Value: #1 La Java 12-1 5th
Next Best: #4 Isn’tshewonderful 8-1 8th
Exotics Use: #3 Sky Lassie 6-1 4th

5th: CLM, 3+, 6f-IT (P6, P3, DD)

$177k C/O starts here..

2nd Wednesday in a row where we are confronted by a slippery carryover sequence. Those that aren’t P6 players will have plenty of fun betting the skein individually. As discussed Tuesday with Andy Serling, the obvious players simply look better than the price alternatives and modest budgets may just have to live or die with them..

Most Likely: #3 Driven by Solar 5-1 (A) 2nd
Next Best: #1 Don’t Say No 3-1 (B) 6th
Exotics Use: #6 Smiling Bob 7-2 (C) 3rd
Super Add: #4 Folk Singer 6-1 (C) WON ($9.20)

6th: NY-ALW/N1X, F&M-3+, 7f-T (G/S, P3, DD)

As Andy opined Tuesday, 7f-T at Belmont is less orderly than a route but far less chaotic than a dash. At least 7 of these 12 (1-2-4-7-8-9-11) look capable of winning, so your budget will determine how much P6 coverage you can manage. Feels like the front half of the field will produce the winner with the pace closer to honest than frenetic..

Most Likely: #11 Atlantic’s Smile 5-1 (A) 2nd
Best Value: #7 Nonnie Connie 15-1 (B) 5th
Exotics Use: #4 Desert Bliss 8-1 (B) WON ($10.80)
Super Add: #2 A Prettydixie 10-1 (C) 7th

7th: OC/S-ALW, F&M-3+, 8.5f-IT (P4, P3, DD)

Best Value: #7 Jean’s Surprise 8-1 (A) 4th
Next Best: #1 Holiday’s Jewel 5-2 (A) 7th
Exotics Use: #2 Sabouli 7-2 (C) 6th
Super Add: #8 Mah Jong Maddnes 10-1 (C) WON ($26.20)

8th: OC/N2X, F&M-3+, 1m-T (P3, DD)

Favored Floral Romance has faced toughies every time out and notably comes back for first time in career without a layoff line. Not only that, but she slipped in a work since Spa start where she ran behind KMc’s nice With Sugar On Top. Good, competitive race but think you can really lean on Mott miss here..

Most Likely: #6 FLORAL ROMANCE 2-1 (A) 4th
Best Value: #7 Rock My Heart 6-1 (B) 5th
Next Best: #8 Sweet and Lovely 4-1 (C) 6th
Exotics Use: #2 Ready Signal 15-1 (X) 3rd

9th: NY-OC/C, 3+, 6.5f (DD)

Going to roll dice and say fact that Midwest & Ness (now Perillo) couldn’t get Be Bullish to the track in modest time after claim is a big negative. At the same time on the positive side, they aren’t dropping him to the bottom fire sale style. Playing against and still a difficult call. Note that Modern Child wasted the whole summer trying grass. Returns to dirt finally and adds hood. Can boost exotics skimming rail..

Most Likely: #4 Jeter 4-1 (A) 7th
Next Best: #6 Litigate 5-1 (B) 5th
Best Value: #2 Modern Child 30-1 (C) 4th
Exotics Use: #8 Crackerjack Jones 15-1 (C) WON ($18.80)

10th: MCLM/$25k, 3+, 7f-T

Very tough finish to the challenging P6 sequence and excellent day of racing..

Saturday bombs leave $50k C/O for Belmont Sunday

Sunday, September 15th, 2013

Tardy getting this out after returning very late last night from fun day at Belmont Saturday and ‘Loose on the Lead’ this morning… $50k carryover available Sunday after some wild winners dotted the Elmont afternoon. Was live to 4 really nice will-pays in late quad yesterday only to see Vinny Goodtimes (8-1) cop the wide open nightcap. Here’s a glance at the C/O sequence…

Elusive C/O maddening; Stakes anchor BEL Saturday

Saturday, September 14th, 2013

Spent more than usual chasing Belmont C/O Friday and came away frustrated going 4 of 6. Miscues came in overvaluing Guyana Princess versus Sense of a Woman ($4.40) in the 4th and via a dreadful effort from Cornelio Velasquez (Summer Place to Be) in the 8th allowing inferior Street Swagg every opportunity to beat him on the front end. (Having exchanged thoughts with Tony Dutrow after the race, you can be assured he wasn’t too happy either.) Winners who hit the sextet got back nearly $100k. Had some successes during the day with Thomas Hill ($16.80), Morethanawarning ($17.40) and Quinby Pete ($8.00) but was more annoyed overall than pleased. Hope everyone did OK. Nice Saturday card at the Big B with a terrific G1 Garden City on tap. Good action to be had at Kentucky Downs, Delaware and elsewhere today as well..

Exotics Use: #2 Scam 3-1 WON ($10.80)

3rd: NY-MCLM/$20k, 3+, 6f (P3, DD)

A very weak group and a level notorious for bizarre upsets. Mr. G. Zee, Prometheus Crown and Sir Maurice dive from NY-MSW company into the abyss. Pat Kelly debuts a Performing Magic colt that his late father bred, Magical Salute..

Most Likely: #1 Mr. G. Zee 6-5 WON ($4.10)
Best Value: #9 Keyaly 5-1 6th
Next Best: #8 Ten Ed 3-1 3rd
Exotics Use: #2 Prometheus Crown 10-1 7th

4th: CLM, 3+, 6f-IT (P3, DD)

Finally get Corybant on the turf but he meets a very solid group for the lawn bow. Has speed to enjoy up close inside trip and reunites with pilot that guided him to MDN win. Up against it from a win perspective but would be thrilled with confirmation of some grass ability and a minor award..

Had hoped to get My Pal of Pals into this set but has to await field with room after running the CLM event in Saratoga. As with all these state bred turf ALW’s, a well-matched field that invites the use of juicy numbers. Be thankful this isn’t in a P4..

Am regularly against Michael Matz’ runners but his horses have been performing with 20% W’s overall over the last 90 days and 5/16 in stakes (1 graded) over that period (Yuzuru, Assateague, Dancing to Town, Colonial Flag, Somali Lemonade). Assateague is going to be loose on the lead in this; could pull a Laughing and not allow anyone to pass..

Best Value: #2 Assateague 6-1 4th

Mott nearly unstoppable when targeting spots like this and Emollient looks like much the horse to beat. Schwartz/C. Brown always tough with imports like Alterlite. NY-bred Discreet Marq is the latest quality product in a steady line from the Generazio Family. Caroline Thomas was moved up in the Lake Placid but ran very well. Gets a pace set up here and may be ignored..
