BELMONT PARK

POST-SCRATCHES

1st: OC/S-ALW, F&M-3+, 6f-IT (P5, P3, DD)

Very tricky start to P5 with field well-matched and dirt-to-turf movers Insolvent (2nd off claim for Jacobson) and So Blessed adding to intrigue. Insolvent and Sunrise Kitty look to be main speeds with a host of stalkers following. Villanella is 3/4 at BEL and ran for Franco 3 weeks ago when receiving pace set up. Crafty Dreamer, flashed real potential as a 3yo before going to the shelf a year. Iselin homebred returned meekly at Spa but has drilled three times since, an excellent sign. May be worth standing with in murky field that will require wide coverage in you don’t believe in any particular player..

Most Likely: #3 Crafty Dreamer 5-1 3rd
Next Best: #6 Reggie D 7-2 4th
Best Value: #1 Ambassador Bridge 10-1 7th

ATR regs Serling, Tammaro and Beer all sided with 7-2 Souper Speedy over the 2 ML choices (7-5 Graydar; 5-2 LaPenta entry), but also acknowledged that if track continues to play to inside speed, Graydar may be impossible to reel in. Think you need to cover all 3 entities (#’s 1-2-5) in multis..

Most Likely: #2 Graydar 7-5 WON ($3.80)
Next Best: #1e LaPenta entry 5-2 5th/7th

Interesting edition of this in division that has been searching for a leader all year. Note The Lumber Guy — defending winner of the event — is in here at 8-1. Has blistered morning watches since first off layoff try upstate and will sit ideal trip behind the 3 speeds (Bahamian Squall, Strapping Groom, Private Zone). Hushion may have Schwartz NY homebred approaching best 3yo form and today would be the day to latch on..

Exotics Use: #3 Nutello 8-1 8th

10th: 95th Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), 3+, 10f (DD)

Can Cross Traffic take his speed 10f? Note that Pletcher notched up his typical 4f drilling to 5/8ths readying the Whitney winner for this spot and possible BC Classic try. Flat Out meanwhile can perch himself in striking distance and attack the front runner at Alvarado’s discretion. Orb, Palace Malice, Last Gunfighter and Alpha all capable for varying degrees of board success, but if there’s a price horse to be employed to boost exotics, it’s the Brazilian import Vitoria Olimpica (20-1) who is 3rd/layoff, impressed upstate and bred for trip..

Most Likely: #6 Flat Out 3-1 3rd
Next Best: #8 Cross Traffic 5-2 7th
Exotics Use: #4 Vitoria Olimpica 20-1 4th

Maiden action highlights Belmont Thursday

Thursday, September 26th, 2013

Fell short Wednesday of solid P5/P4 returns when 3rd choice Sally’s Dream overhauled no-excuse Edie in the late stages of the 5th. P5 play relied too heavily on Edie and Shakeira and utilized too many multiples in the 3rd where Baffle Me dominated. Was stymied in the late quad in the first leg when Yield Bogey bested the 6th and was doubly frustrated in the race when My Pal of Pals found some traffic off the turn and idled to be 5th by 4 lengths. Hope everyone did OK. Thursday slate just a water-treading ahead of Santa Anita opening day Friday and outlandish-looking ‘Super Saturday’…

BELMONT PARK

POST-SCRATCHES

1st: OC/N1X, F&M-3+, 9f-IT (P5, P3, DD)

Wave Theory obviously will take some beating, but there are plenty of solid competitors lurking if she missteps and a few big prices that can boost the exotics..

Most Likely: #3 Wave Theory 2-1 WON ($3.50)

Exotics Use: #5 Lisvernane 6-1 DNF-Lost irons

2nd: OC/S-ALW, F&M-3+, 7f (P4, P3, DD)

Another event where there’s a clear horse to beat in Lion D N A, but Bobby Jo is within striking range and could sit a sweet trip surveying the speeds up front. Nuffsaid Nuffsaid ran career best at Spa last time and is not impossible with another forward move. Has shown speed of late and not a ‘need the lead’ type, so outside pressing voyage with Jo. Ortiz easy to envision..

Most Likely: #1 Lion D N A 4-5 2nd

Classy little gathering and Hennig’s nice Baffle Me certainly a deserving fave. Key will be if and when pressure is applied inside from Free as a Bird and outside by My Jopia. P6 widely distributed; Gustavian cops jump thriller

Friday, September 20th, 2013

Despite a slate that appeared as demanding as those that created the triple carryover, Belmont returned to a sense of normalcy Thursday to generate a $17k payday for more than 80 tickets. Favored Readtheprospectus ($3.90/5th), Selenite ($8.20/8th) and Hot Rendezvous ($4.60/10th) combined with 2nd choice Summer Shiner ($10.00/7th) and mid-priced ‘shots Double the Energy ($18.20/6th) and Lawyer Jim ($17.20/9th) for a positive result that returned a nice amount of coin into many players’ hands.

Earlier in the day, Jack Fisher continued his excellent summer-fall run upsetting a messy running of the Entenmann with Staying On ($29.40) and then came within a bob of sweeping the jump double minutes later. Leslie and Paddy Young put Gustavian into the ‘chaser title hunt as the ’12 Entenmann winner aced Belmont again in a thrilling Lonesome Glory win over Fisher’s All Together. It was a bittersweet half hour for Gustavian owner Magalen Bryant however, as the Virginia doyen had to endure the breakdown and euthanizing of her Sulwaan out of the Entenmann.

Staying On’s upset in the opener and Roman Invader’s wiring of the Parlo at 12-1 tripped another giant P5 payoff as the wager returned $8,051 to an estimated 13 punches (.50)! Nice Friday card features the return of 2012 Juvenile Champion Shanghai Bobby ahead of a weekend that features multiple stakes agendas at Philadelphia, Laurel and Charles Town.
