It is with much sadness and heavy heart that we wish to inform that STRAIT OF DOVER was euthanized this evening at Milton Equine Hospital in Toronto.

He had an operation for a twisted large colon (540 degrees) in the AM on July 11/13. The surgery initially appeared hopeful but turned for the worse the last two days. It was necessary to end his pain and suffering.

It is very unfortunate that we will never know his full racing or stallion potential.

Many of us will miss him dearly but will always remember the joy he brought us -however brief.

Have you looked at his record on Equibase? He has 2 layoffs of over a year, then this race was coming back off an 8 month layoff. It's people like this that give the sport a bad name. He clearly had soundness issues and had no chance of being out of the bottom of the claiming barrel after being in G1s. I'm betting his sudden form drop and layoff was some injury he's been dealing with for years now. He was a 9 year old. It'd be one thing if he was a hard knocking campaigner who has no reason to stop because he's only ever had the same problems as any long-running horse. This didn't have to happen. I get that claiming races exist for a reason, but there was no way this particular horse was anything other than a ticking time bomb.
