This IMO is very rare as I think jocks have their area of expertise. Leparoux for one IMO is way more effective on Turf coming late. He is a great play against on a favorite needing the lead. Desourmeux of old used to be the same way.

Bejarano is good, but not sure he could have done what Joel has done moving east.

I actually think it will be interesting to see how he does at Belmont. No doubt he will have a fine meet, because he'll ride good horses and is a great rider.

He won't have that at Belmont.
Leparoux, JJ, Jr would be the guys I would say have top jockey skills right now. Rick Dominguez would be if healthy. But Joel has proven himself so quickly back east and now is better than he was in Cali and getting better. He will kill it at Belmont.

I had the opportunity to meet Joel at Saratoga 2012....

he is a fine young man and one heck of a rider...

By the way, the other big jockey story in 2013 (as Steve has brought up) is the comeback of Mr. Prado...

I remember getting into an argument with some Gulfstream railbirds back in 2011 who said that Edgar's career was over.

Great to see him back at the top of his game again......

Very happy for Shug/Joel. Two guys who do all the dirty work to be as great as they are.

i am thrilled for shug, and for all the connections of orb. decades of hard work went into that horse, and he paid them all in spades.

so, so happy for them all. but especially shug, and of course for joel.

I agree with the move back to JV. He has ridden @ Ascot before while JR hasn't.

Another Dick move by Barry imo. Why are there so many good horses owned by a Dick?

I'm pretty critical of Irwin generally, but this situation involved factors other than his usual peccadilloes. It involves some tensions between the Animal Kingdom 'camp' and Rosario agent Ron Anderson.

As to Rosario overall, coupled with Anderson's famously outstanding 'agentship', he's sure elevated himself to the top of the rider pecking order nationally.

By riding Ramsey's Rockets? Rosario is terrific but lets not too excited about wins on horses that were primed to excel. Surely any competent jock would have been able to be carried to the finish line by those "well meant" animals.
