Absolutely nobody wants another incident like that. There is universal agreement of course.

The challenge is finding out if there is anything we can do, what should be done, while not taking freedoms away from the 99.999% of law-abiding citizens in this country.

Some have suggested stationing police at the schools - though not necessarily on open patrol. For instance, who was monitoring the cameras at Sandy Hook? If it was a cop, that guy wouldn't have gotten to far in the school - the cop is already on site and ready to respond. Much like the guys at NORAD on duty, without a missile launch it'd be a pretty boring job, but somebody needs to be there if the worst happens.

The really big thing is we have (thank God) a pretty free society. Unfortunately that means that criminals will always have the initiative. Outside of totalitarianism based on 24/7 surveillance, I don't know how you change that. The criminal is the one who decides when and how to initiate any crime.
