Imp's win in the 1899 Suburban Handicap in track record time was probably the first truly great performance where a female scored against males.

Imp made 50 starts in her 3-year-old season -- and more amazingly, she did it over a span of just 7.5 months because her first race was on April 1st and her last on November 15th.

The year she won the Suburban was her five-year-old season...and the Suburban was in a stretch where she raced 21 times in a span of 86 days. Basically, she ran once every four days for almost three full months.

On four different occasions during her career -- Imp raced on back-to-back days. She made 171 starts and raced till the age of 7.

Here is Imp's trainer talking about all the crap he took for racing his horse so heavily and working her hard in between races.

Imagine if a horse today attempted to make 21 starts in 86 days -- or 4 times race on back-to-back days.

Gallorette was a very tough horse who ran against top class males about 40 or 50 times starting as early as her 2nd place finish in the Wood Memorial.

She was timber and a excellent horse. Esposa probably the closest thing in history to her post Imp.

Here is a race that included the mare Esposa and the legendary stallion Bull Lea.

Esposa won the Remsen at age 2 and finished 3rd in the Hopeful. She was 2nd in the 1935 Whitney. 2nd in the 1936 Whitney. Won the 1937 Whitney. And was 2nd in the 1938 Whitney. Four straight years of top 2 finishes in the Whitney.

Bull Lea is arguably the greatest stallion in racing history. He sired a record SEVEN different horses in the Hall of Fame. He sired 3 different Kentucky Derby winners. 1 Triple Crown winner (Citation) and the first filly to ever be voted Horse of the Year (Twilight Tear)

Esposa made 6 starts at the 1938 Saratoga meet -- and faced War Admiral 4 different times. After leaving Saratoga, she next won the Hawthorne Gold Cup before running into Seabiscuit.

Bull Lea wasn't even one of the 10 best male horses Esposa faced in her long career. He just sired numerous horses who happened to be a lot better than himself on the track.

Also the sire of the dam of Gate Dancer (Sun Gate)

(I also love seeing those old mud marks in the Form)
