never thought I would say this, but Santa Anita is my favorite SoCal track.
they are the only track to show any resistence to this CHRB mandate.

Even though the new track has been open for about 7 weeks now, they just started racing on it this past Wednesday. So they really didn't know what the ideal amount of water was to have the best track for racing. They obviously have several different goals. They want a fair track where you can win from anywhere. They want a safe track for the horses. They want a track that doesn't have too much kickback. So there are a number of things that they are trying to do. The first week was pretty much trial and error. The first couple of days were very good. The track was safe, there wasn't too much kickback and the come-from-behinders seemed like they had a little advantage. I guess they figured that if they put more water on it that they could cut down the kickback even more and it may may the track a little fairer in that it would give the speed horses just as good a chance as the come-from-behinders. Anyway, adding alot of extra water ended up being a mistake because it made the track too hard, it favored the speed horses too much, and it made the track less safe. Hopefully they have it figured out now.

I heard Jack Carava on Sunday telling Tony Saavedra that it was the riders who wanted the extra water on the track. I dont know if its true or not but it sounds very possible.
