exactly... those SEC, Pac 12, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC teams fight for recruits.

They dont sign them by offering them top academic programs.

Who knows, maybe Duke boosters don't give their football players boats n hoes... but what about that basketball program?

The dope game didn't end with the death of Tony Montana in "Scarface." It did not become more honorable, less violent.

The people who piously believe the corruption at Miami is somehow worse than the corruption in Columbus or Austin or Muncie or Boise or Durham are fooling themselves. It's all relative. You move Ohio State or Kansas or Ball State or Duke to within a 15-minute drive of the South Beach nightclubs, the Miami strip clubs and all the super-wealthy sports fans/groupies wanting to live vicariously through celebrity athletes, and Uncle Luke and Lil Madoff would befriend Buckeyes, Jayhawks, Blue Devils and Cardinals.

There's a Nevin Shapiro knockoff on every campus. He might not own a yacht or have easy access to hookers, but he supplies in abundance whatever decadence Iowa City has to offer.

The people shocked and surprised by the Yahoo! Sports story have never visited South Beach or stepped inside a Miami gentlemen's club. Tricking (and treating) is part of Miami culture, perhaps even more so than Las Vegas. The allegation that Shapiro provided the players with prostitutes sounds absolutely scandalous unless you've socialized extensively in Miami. In all likelihood, Shapiro mostly threw parties and invited girls who work at the plethora of strip clubs. In other words, he invited the same local girls who frequent the plethora of "legit" nightclubs in South Beach. Maybe cash exchanged hands, but it is not difficult to find attractive, loose women in Miami willing to hook up with potential pro athletes.

Really? So you're saying that a player attending Penn State or Missouri is getting treated to hookers and other payments that should make them otherwise ineligible? I know you don't believe that, antitrust.

Clearly, there are dirty programs (Miami has always been one of them). And naturally, lots of college coaches play on the edges. But there's literally a 0.0000001 percent chance that there are many college programs out there with the "benefits" University of Miami players are alleged to have received. You really think that widespread use of hookers and blow throughout the college game would somehow not be uncovered, especially considering the scandals at USC, North Carolina, Ohio State, and now Miami over the last four to five years?

Selling a couple jerseys (AJ Green) or gold pants (tOSU) is in a whole different ballpark than what Nevin Shapiro is alleging.

I'd love to hear of the folks you know who've worked in major division one football programs. Presuming you won't name a team, what conference? Big 10? Big 12? Big East? That would make for some interesting discussion.

Big East... thats as far as I'll take it though.

believe me, recruits from most all big schools are supplied girls. You really think that Shapiro stopped off in Hialeah and picked up some crack whores on the side of the street for the players to run trains on? My father says there is no way Penn State would ever be involved in stuff like that because he has a ton of respect for Joe Pa... but IMO thats just turning a blind eye because you like someone. He also thinks Phillies players didnt use steriods back in the day. Wasnt Penn State winning a ton of games back in the 80's and 90's when the cheating was as bad as its ever been?

I don't dispute that shady dealings are happening, as I said before. But come on, read the report. 72 players, Frank Haith, and other coaches all received some sort of illegal benefit from Teddy Dupay (love the pseudonym, by the way). Throwing a party and having loose sorority girls available is a lot different than renting a room for a night and paying strippers to play hide the salami.

Just because they haven't been caught does not mean nothing is going on.

The NCAA rules are so insane, I truly believe if you looked close enough at Stanford, you'd find violations. Surely not to the degree of what went on at the U, but the random dinner, plane ticket for an underprivilidged player, couple hundred bucks tucked into a pocket.... It's happening there too.

Good question. Let me preface this with I am definitly not a Hurricanes fan. If this is an isolated incident then there is no question they should. But if anyone believes that this is an isolated incident then they are a moron. This stuff happens everywhere. Miami just happenned to get caught.
In the last 5 years Miami has had 0 players arrested. Florida, who some people consider a clean program, had like 40 and Florida State had like 30.
Miami has rejected numerous 5 star high school players in the last 10 years because of shady backgrounds or poor academic persormance. The SEC schools couldn't sign these guys up fast enough.
The USA today published the graduation rate of all teams that made a Bowl game last year. Miami was second only to Stanford.
