What an unbelievable game. The US blew leads of 1-0 and then 2-1 in the 2nd OT.
Not to mention the fact that they couldn't finish several chances early in the first half. They let the Japanese hang around and in the shootout the Japanese goalie made several saves. You have to definitely tip your hat to her and the rest of the Japanese squad who looked overmatched much of the game, but hung around to win.

Sidenote: I have to admit that I'm not the biggest fan of womens sports, but this soccer game was so refreshing/enjoyable with the lack of flopping, diving, bitching and moaning. The guys could take a lesson from the girls in this case how a championship game should be played.

Let ANY team hang around that long and they will eventually bury you for it. Quite the resilient bunch the Japanese are.

The 2nd goal by Japan was was well deserved (a very good player stepping up.) The first goal by Japan is the one that shouldn't of happened. That was a big American mistake.

Agreed. That defender sending the ball feebly over the middle? Yikes.

I think what really lost it for them was that each time they got up, they stopped pressing. Instead of attacking, it seemed like they just would clear the ball downfield, and/or keep kicking it out of bounds.

Women's soccer is pretty cool IMO. I rather watch it than mens soccer.

Come to think of it, I think only soccer and tennis are better to watch when women are playing.

Out of the major sports that is.

Agree with all of this. I watched pretty much the entire game in between getting killed at the windows and it was an enjoyable game.

unbelievable game. they just stopped playing once they got a lead. when you are up 1 the idea is to play like you're down 1. Japan had a lot of chances to tie before they did both times they were down. Glad i watched the game instead of getting slapped around like i did on Saturday.(thank God for Havelock

Seems like all teams play the same way, when they are up a goal they retreat into defense mode, reminds me of the NFL prevent victory defenses. As long as the US kept the pressure on, they were the superior team but once they gave the Japanese girls space to employ their passing game...that changed. The US could have scored 3-4 goals early but just simply couldn't convert good opportunities. It was a great final and neither team really deserved to lose, if the US was to be beat, I'm glad it was Japan.

And like clockwork, Halladay can't make it through five due to "heat related illness" and ends up with the loss.

yep. this is officially the jinx thread. verlander, hamels, jurrjens, and halladay all get lit up first start back from the ASG. Halladay even ends up with heat exhaustion!!! he looked like he was going to pass out on the mound.
