At the paddock before the race, two little boys passed out Ruler on Ice buttons to the spectators. We all took one, and then, after the boys were out of earshot, made jokes about Ruler on Ice's chances. After the race, I kept the button, to put in my mouth right next to the large helping of crow.

The problem with Mission Approved's chances, at least in my mind, was that he hadn't run in freaking 11 months. How many horses win G1's loafing along on the lead after a year on the shelf?
