How can their be a copyright on a commonly defined term?

So, say I made a movie and called it 'Water'. Would anyone who tried to name a horse 'Water' be subjected to copyright violations?

I came across Cape Colony and Great Trek when I was looking up Voortrekker to remind myself what the history was.

Both are available and relate to South Africa--the Voortrekkers, specifically. I don't think these came up in the past.
