The international racing community has demonstrated over the last two Breeders’ Cup events that it will bring its best horses to Santa Anita. This is essential to the survival and growth of the event and our worldwide betting pools. We are a global industry, and we have to do everything we can to maintain Breeders’ Cup as the true World Championships. Dubai has made a bold challenge for this title with the establishment of the spectacular Meydan Racecourse. The Dubai Racing Club will continue to expand its product and increase purses. The path Breeders’ Cup chooses will determine whether this challenge is successfully met
Does "expand it's product" mean that Tam Lin will race twice a week instead of just once a week? But the most compelling reason for making Santa Anita the permanent venue is the sheer survival of Breeders’ Cup as a viable and profitable company for the advancement of our industry. If Breeders’ Cup is unable to sustain itself and ultimately grow, it will certainly insure the continued decline of Thoroughbred racing in North America. Companies blind to the evolving landscape of their markets and paralyzed by fear of change are destined for decline and failure. The ability to grow purses or even maintain the current level will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, with the current model and industry economics Yep without the BC Cup purses will have to decline..lol How did this guy get so wealthy? Gene lottery? |

YEP! that horse from Norway sealed it for me also this year. Next year I heard they are getting a rep from Turkey and India as well. It's the best of the best.. Nick it's Mike D' kock and bunch of clueless ex camel trainers save the odd european. A billion dollar track for 25 days of racing and no indoor ski slope pathetic?lol

If you want to say that the Sheikh is totally over the top and the thing is overblown, I'd agree, but the BC is in no position to dispute with the DRC who hosts a "World Championship." NT |

It's certainly a lot easier for Asian and Australian horses to come to Dubai than America and that speaks to the reason why the BC is misguided in that approach. Hell, they're concerned about getting horses from all over the globe and they didn't even have one of the two best horses in training in this country last year! NT |

Honestly it is just another example of those in power in this business having a total disconnect from their customers and simply not understanding what they are. The entire "World championship" naming thing was a gimmick for TV (ESPN specifically) to promote. It appears these people have fallen for their own trick. And people wonder why things are so screwed up in this business....

For most of the less well off racing nations, where purses are very small (most of So. America, S. Africa, much of Europe) nominatig to the BC is prohibitively expensive. What are the odds that a foal born in Brazil this Oct will one day be anywhere near the BC? Very small. Now factor in that major G1 races are run in some places for the equivalent of about $50k and the fact that the sire of the foal is not BC nominated, it's not worth it to nominate. OTOH, if he turn out to be a decent runner he can go to Dubai for the Carnival, run for US quality purses and the it costs nothing to enter. If he gets invited to the big races on WC night, there are no nomination and supplemental fees. Comparing Dubai to the BC is apples to oranges. As for the Cup, while I agree that the concept was designed as a travelling event na small part of me thinks leaving it at SA might be good. If the BC becomes a Cali event, maybe NY can promote their big fall races as the championship events they once were.
