I didn't read the article, but I don't see how a guy who's now won three Derbys doesn't make his way to Saratoga.

So if he had won only 2 he doesn't get in?
I mean Johnny V has a total of none and he is a HOF for sure....Maybe a bit too much emphasis on one race here. Not saying he doesn't belong but the Derby is not the only important race. |

Realistically, there's the Derby, and then there's everything else...

Johnny V. could win 37 Westchesters, 23 Lake Georges, and 403 Stuyvesants, and it wouldn't match up to Calvin's three Derbys. Like Travis said.

travis is right it's the derby , it's the world series of horse racing , it may only be 1 race , but , it's the most important race every year by leaps and bounds

Shouldn't riding ability count for something....I mean why not just induct every Derby winner and leave everyone else out. That's silly. He needs to belong on his total resume, not simply Derbys.

Maybe Calvin will get an Eclipse award which just might cement a place in the HOF.

Yes Calvin should be in the Hall of Fame and it should mention that being a mud lark helped him to the winners circle. |

Mike Kane was the long time communications director of the Hall of Fame. He's very qualified to consider Borel's resume on this topic, and what he lists as the accomplishments to date absolutely place Calvin on the HOF cusp. His career isn't over by a long stretch, so he'll end up with way over 5,000 wins. Fold in these late career heroics on the national stage, and I think you have to acknowledge that Borel is approaching Hall worthiness.
His major stakes wins (Wikipedia) Breeders' Cup Juvenile (2006) Kentucky Derby (2007, 2009, 2010) Preakness Stakes (2009) Super Derby (1991) Arkansas Derby (1993) Count Fleet (1995) Falls City Handicap (1996, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2008) Apple Blossom Handicap (1997, 2001) Fleur de Lis Handicap (1997, 2009) Essex Handicap (1998, 2007) Clark Handicap (1999) Kentucky Cup Classic Handicap (1999) Bashford Manor Stakes (2000, 2008) Oaklawn Handicap (2000) Bourbon Stakes (2002) Silverbulletday Stakes (2003) Ack Ack Handicap (2004) Stephen Foster Handicap (2006) Amsterdam (2006) Tampa Bay Derby (2007) Travers Stakes (2007) Sword Dancer (2007) Alabama Stakes (2007) Jim Dandy Stakes (2007) Razorback Breeders' Cup Handicap (2008) Golden Rod Stakes (2002,2008) Hal's Hope Handicap (2009) Fair Grounds Oaks (2009) Fantasy Stakes (2009) Kentucky Oaks (2009) Louisville Stakes (2009) Haskell Invitational (2009) Woodward Stakes (2009) Mother Goose (2009) Kentucky Jockey Club (2009) Derby Trial (2010)
