Now on to their a$$-beatin' in the post.

Yeah Tim that sweep will be talked about for decades.
I think what happened this year was this: The yankees had fielded an all star team of sorts the past few years. The problem with all star teams is that noone wants to accept a role and noone leads the team, everyone else expects someone else to do it.
I also think the pitchers had slacked off the last few years because they always felt the hitting would bail them out. Little did we yankee fans know that the injuries we thought had doomed them, actually reinvented the team and made it a beast.
When Matsui and Sheff went down it was tragic, then we lost giambi for a while as well as damon for a while and lost Cano for over a month.
Funny thing happened then, the pitchers bore down, guys Like Melky Cabrera and Bernie Williams stepped up, and Jeter just flat out took the role as leader on the field and off and directed them. The other big deal was that the Yankees had relied on power and hadn't been adept at manufacturing runs with old fashioned things like stolen bases, sac flies, bunts, etc. When they were suffering from all those missed players they started playing good old fashioned run manufacturing baseball.
It was almost like a boot camp for them. They emerged from he injuries and kept up the mindset that carried them through the hard times. Whats even scarier is that the big lead allowed Matsui and Sheff not to have to rush back and both are 100% physically fine. Matsui is already knocking the rust off and I expect Sheff to do the same thing the next 10 days, hes been activated again. With those guys back in the lineup and guys like Melky and bernie available to fill in or pinch hit if needed, I expect them to roll in the playoffs.

LOL! I wouldnt go that far. That 7th game walk off HR by Aaron Boone will be talked about for a while even though they failed in the WS that year to the Marlins. But that 5 game series sweep, while I agree put the dagger in the Sox and clinched a division title for the Yankees, will not matter squat unless they win a title this year. Anything else is a huge disappointment at this point.

They dont have the Red Sox to beat in the playoffs, so nothing short of a Yankee WS title will be good enough for Yankee fans.

You can only rest on that 5 game sweep for so long. Now its time to play against teams who didnt give up like the very disappointing Red Sox.

I'm so sick of working late and so depressed. Tonight I am eating a whole pizza by myself (just got here ) then off to Cold Stone for a 20oz milkshake. Cant get any better than that.

Well I mean first people said it was the Red Sox and Chisox who would beat them in the Al. Well, adios to them, they couldnt even make it to post season.
I really don't see anyone in either league that would be favored over the Yanks in a 5 game or 7 game series.
Not to mention all the arm rest that the pitchers have gotten as well as the rest the starting players have received.
Oakland has that going for them also.
But the Yanks played both Minny and tigers well, and both of those have been engaged in a still ongoing dogfight. All their pitchers(relievers and starters) have been abused and will continue to be for another week at least.
Talk about a bad setup, no way for me in any way would I pick them.
The Nl is a joke in my opinion, the whole league.
I will say it now, if anyone beats the Yanks it won't be in the World Series, or one of the central teams, it will be the A's. They are the biggest threat. Rested players and arms and sharp baseball when it mattered late in the year. To anyone rooting for the AL central teams, good luck, you will need it.

I will say it now, if anyone beats the Yanks it won't be in the World Series, or one of the central teams, it will be the A's.

I agree somewhat. I think the A's have the best chance but both teams need to win 1st round games first just to meet and thats no lock. I dont feel that about the NL at all. While inferior to the AL by a lot, any of those teams can beat any of the AL teams in a given 7 game series. Not likely but wouldnt completely shock me.

Tell me Mike, did you really give the Marlins any chance against the Yankees in 2003? I sure didnt. The Yankees were just as good that year, with better starting pitching, and the Mets are far better right now than the Marlins were in 2003.

Yeah Tim I did.
The Yankee-red sox Series was brutal and required the yanks to really overwork the pitching staff. You may not believe me but I said as much at the time to everyone. Wells and Clemens were old then(even older now!!!) and neither was in the best of form or health.
We had Petitte and Mussina pitching well then but I was really worried about the team being exhausted and overworked. And thats really how they played, like a tired team.
The AL central teams have just been dueling so hard for so long. The A's aren't a dominant team but do play sound fundamental baseball and have been in rest mode like the Yanks with the eye on the postseason for quite some time now.

I remember being so depressed and down on baseball after the Yankees beat the Sox in 2003 playoffs. I was eating dinner at Applebees the night of game 1 between the Marlins and Yanks. They had it on at the bar and I couldnt even watch. I angled my seat so I couldnt see the TV. Later that night I turned on the TV to see that the Marlins were about to win the game and they did. I still thought the Yankees would come back but they played (as you eluded to) like a very tired team.

My only question is how come the Red Sox sweep the Cardinals in 2004 after a very tiring 7 games with the Yankees, coming back from the dead? You cant tell me those pitchers werent tired?

I got some bucks on the A's,and no doubt that I want Detroit.You can have THE TWINKS.I'll avoid them as long as possible.Maybe you guys can beat them,and then the A's meet the Yanks.That is the way I would prefer it to go.I think the A's are most vulnerable against a hot team(like themselves.)You are no longer a hot team.You lost to BOSTON last weekend,and couldn't even win to start your own party last night.Is that a half a$$ party,or what?
