Listen fellas, I've been watching and betting racing for over 40 years in NY and going to races in NJ, PA, FL, MA and Maryland. You can't say with a straight face that Borel wasn't slightly excessive with the whip. Watch the race again and see how he gets into her. Does it make a difference? Would she have still won if he was not so aggressive? Bottom line is that there are elements who will bring this up and frown on racing.

I agree but....it happens in the 10k claiming races as well. Unless they make new guidelines for all levels of horses, Borel had every right to do it as long as RA wasn't injured.

You must have hated Jorge Chavez with a passion back in the 90s...

This is reminiscent of when Mike Smith beat the tar out of Azeri in the Humana Distaff in 2004. I believe he hit her almost 30 times.

Pat Day was notorious for 20 or more swats of the whip in the stretch. Reference Farda Amiga in the Alabama in 2002.

It's really not even something worth talking about, especially considering he said afterwards that she reacted more to seeing Macho Again than anything else.

If it makes you feel any better, he'll go after a $5K starter horse at Churchill with equal gusto.

More like, he should be fined or suspended for all the "showboating" he does in the post parade & right after he crosses the finish line with her!

That twirling he did in the Haskell was kinda funny given you know he won and didn't drop the whip. My favorite Borel showboating comes from the announcer (not Durkin) calling the Oaks. He said something to the effect of Calvin 'looks over his right shoulder..no danger! He looks over his left shoulder...no danger!' I liked the way he delivered it. It's a nice way of saying what many of us were thinking, that Calvin's gawking around is gonna make him fall off one of these days and that we wish he would (expletive) knock it off because does he honestly think someone's gonna make up that much ground? He knew she was a mile in front for pete's sake.

Too fckin bad if they dont like it. It is part of the game and if they were using those new whips then they dont even need whipping rules. They are like nerf whips.

I am sure that Calvin was counting the amount of times he hit her in the stretch, it is not like he has his mind on holding off the closers or reacted in the heat of the moment.

Whips that don't whip are worthless.

Chantal Sutherland would disagree, she would tell you they are worth $4,208.

I also disagree with the original post. Once, way back in the glory days of the Aksarben, my brother and I counted Tim Doocy whipping a horse 43 times during the course of a race. Yes it was excessive. But considering the horse was passed in the stretch and rallied to win made us appreciate his effort on a cheap claimer.

I am sure there was more "barn" money than we knew on the horse which accounted for his excessive effort in a meaningless race. The winnings on our $20 win tickets seemed extra sweet that day. I don't know Tim Doocy, but if any of you do, tell him thanks from 2 racing fans in Nebraska.

Oh, and I think the horse "bounced" in his next start.

I am sure Mike has the old one just in case she gets tired and needs to finish up?

He seemed to ride her okay, but everyone else at Saratoga terribly. Its funny, if this was any other jockey he'd be the brunt of many jokes, but he gets to ride superstars like her. I think hes a very below average jockey or at least he played one at Saratoga. He rode his horse (Marias Charm) in the very next race as if he cared very little or at all.

Anyone read the comments under the Blood-Horse's posting of Haskell's article on Facebook regarding Calvin's ride?
