How many races are even run on the Saratoga main at 6.5 furlongs? And out of that number, how many of them are run as stakes, much less with Grade 1 winners in the lineup? It would be surprising if the track record wasnt smashed yesterday given this field.

The Amsterdam had only been run twice at 6.5 furlongs and all the other stakes are for 2yos or NY Breds. So not too surprising this record would go down.

That's true. It's not surprising that the record could go down. That's why not that big a deal should be made of it. The focus of the race should be on how well Quality Road returned and how it sets him and the Capt Candyman up for their next races. The fact that it was a track record is really irrelevant, as evidenced by nearly three horses breaking the record in the same race and four going sub-1:14 4/5

A few of you asked about the Beyer figure for Quality Road's Amsterdam. It has been provisionally given a 103 amid the ongoing uncertainty over the fractional and final times for the race. If you took the clocking of 1:13.45 for 6.5f at face value, and assigned the race the same variant that worked perfectly for every other dirt race on the card, it would get a 119, which seems impossibly high given that Quality Road stumbled at the start and raced wide and that such a winning figure would give Capt. Candyman Can a 113, a 14-point career top in a race where he altered course sharply, and distant third-place finisher Captain Cherokee a 104, a 16-point career top.

I think the main problem seems to be that they arrived at 119 on a single variant. Other people have come up with figures that would place it at 110 or 112 on a single variant. So they may not only be putting the races on the second variant too low but may also be overrating the races on the first variant by 7 to 9 points.

If that's so, they gave 44/1 debuter Tri Polar an 86 for winning the 20K MCL on race after the Amsterdam!

If that's so, they gave Dance Gal Dance a 7 point new career top and Doremifasolateedo a big double digit jump off of his last two.


I accept the 1:13.45 final time as obvious fact and only came back with a 109 Beyer for the race. They have the surrounding races too fast.
