Why do they have to be dirt horses? I would be happy to ride Gio Ponti like Gomez did at Santa Anita all winter on the main track, money is money.

Gomez rode Gio ponti twice and finished fifth in one of those. All he won was the Sir Beaufort.

The point is nobody ships to poly/cushion.. Who is shipping an allowance type or higher priced grass claimer to CA? If you own a horse east of Montana its easier to go to La. or Fl. for grass in the winter. Ca is in trouble and the clouds are thicker by the minute. Unless some little girl clicks her heels soon this cyclone is about to wipe out a big piece of racing. Believe me its very sad. I think its a travesty and hope things change although this rush to polytrack really worked against the sport..

For the record I was in favor of poly because I was convinced it was in the best (health) interest of horses. I thought healthier horses bigger fields more betting etc... I was SO wrong!

I had an open mind to the change, the constant string of early speed wins was also getting to me, that being said it was a ill conceived decision.

Its still alot of money, what a million bucks some turf horse could ship in for in the pacific classic, is a million bucks enough to ship a good turf horse to beat dirt horses running on the wrong surface? If I owned one it would be.

It's not about filling the Santa Anita Derby..It's about filling the 40k claiming event on a wednesday in Feb for 36k purse so the industry can sustain itself.
It's about Baffert leaving to NY or Mitchell leaving to Chicago. It started with Lobo, who is next?

Baffert, when did he leave? He has run horses at Saratoga and ny for a decade, thats a very weak argument. Mitchell, last I checked he was right near the tops for wins, he left, who knew.

The trainers aint leaving, the owners are not sending their horses away, some are relocating themselves, some are not buying horses and bringing them in the first place.

Lobo leaving, thats funny. Many of his owners are not even local to socal.

I explained this to you last night, the 40k level horse, those owners have gotten swallowed up in the economy in california, it has zip to do with the surface.

Of course Freddy the discussion was about horses shipping in, then you change it to that does not fill a 40k race. Thats an apples and oranges discussion and you very well know it.

I wasn't suggesting that those guys had left but I was suggesting that the environment is fertile for such exodus.

My point on shippers is that its hard to fill races when nobody comes to your track aside from what is stabled there and in decline.. When you are in NY you draw from horses that can ship in from 300 mile radius..
