I don't think he ran on mud before the Derby. Just synthetics and the dirt at Sunland.

so while the ride was great , the mud could have also moved him up big time no?

Sorta off topic but I learned one thing between The Derby and The Belmont -

pay closer attention to breeding, especially The Belmont given the distance.

It could have. But he did run a great race in the Preakness as well, so it's hard to say
