I guess I just don't understand why this is a thread-worthy issue.
He said it would be "one of the largest Muslim countries in the world." Well, using dellinger's numbers, there are 33 nations in the world with a larger Muslim population than the United States, and 160 nations in the world with a smaller Muslim population. Does that make it "one of the largest?" Well, it is in the top 20th percentile. Does that make him so terribly wrong in the statement he made that he is unquestionably "wrong again." I guess it does for some, but it seems to me that it all depends on each person's relative definition of "largest." I think the bigger question is.....who gives a crap? |

Although, this is obviously such an important issue, that I guess I get why your decision to resort to name-calling might be understandable. Obviously the United States would qualify only because of the overall size of the population. It is nowhere near the top in terms of the percentage of the population. That is obvious. It also has nothing at all to do with my point. Perhaps he should have said, "the United States has a larger number of Muslim residents than the vast majority of nations on the planet." Would that have been acceptable to you? Last edited by miraja2 : 06-03-2009 at 10:11 PM. |

"Violent extremists have exploited these tensions in a small but potent minority of Muslims. The attacks of September 11th, 2001 and the continued efforts of these extremists to engage in violence against civilians has led some in my country to view Islam as inevitably hostile not only to America and Western countries, but also to human rights. This has bred more fear and mistrust." "So long as our relationship is defined by our differences, we will empower those who sow hatred rather than peace, and who promote conflict rather than the cooperation that can help all of our people achieve justice and prosperity. This cycle of suspicion and discord must end." "In Ankara, I made clear that America is not - and never will be - at war with Islam. We will, however, relentlessly confront violent extremists who pose a grave threat to our security. Because we reject the same thing that people of all faiths reject: the killing of innocent men, women, and children. And it is my first duty as President to protect the American people.

This was my point, also. The only ones who care about this are the ones looking for a reason for this president to fail. All hail Rush Limbaugh! Or bow to him, or whatever it is you do to him. I think I know what you would do to him, if you got the chance! |

The thing that didn't make sense to me about this thread was that it is devoted to a particular line in a speech in which Obama was simply trying to emphasize to his audience that there is a large Muslim population in the United States. Given that, as you pointed out, there are over 6 million Muslims in the US, that seemed like a somewhat reasonable - if not terribly important - point. Making this point wasn't the main thing he was trying to accomplish in this trip, it was just one point in a speech. Why would he talk about how many Christians live in the country in this particular speech? Everybody already knows that, and it had nothing to do with his larger point. I still fail to see how making that relatively simple and obvious point makes me an 'idiot,' but as you continue to demonstrate, you are entitled to your opinion. |
