Either Borel is smarter than all the other riders or he is less afraid. Why doesn't anyone else seem enamored with saving ground? And as for all the trainers who insist their horses stay wide to stay out of trouble, they could take a page from Borel's thinking.

yeah, but how often do you see a horse get the door slammed shut on him down on the rail? when it works, you look like a genius. when it doesn't, you get hounded for trying it.

You can take the risk of getting the door slammed shut in the Derby when you are riding a 50-1 shot.

When the connections woke up this morning, did they really think they had a reasonable chance at winning, or did they figure they had a shot to pick up some good purse money for running fourth. Going to the gate Calvin had to be thinking that he would take back, save ground, start picking up horses on the far turn, and maybe hit the board if they are lucky and get a clean trip.

that's probably exactly what he was thinking. i don't think any of them dreamed of winning. a nice showing, yes. but winning?! lol i don't know that i've ever been more shocked by the derby winner.

This was before my time, but this had to have been how handicappers felt after the Caracas Cannonball won.

Gotta tell this story......

My daughter (she's 6) loved Friesian Fire. It was all she talked about all day. "When is #6 gonna run?" "Come on #6!!" She really got fired up when she saw him on the track. She was going nuts during the race. When Mine That Bird won, she was tore up (bless her heart!)! Then when they showed Brothers interviewing Borel on the track, she looks at the TV and yells "I really don't like that man!!!"

Calvin, hats off to you on a great ride. But I know of 1 little girl who won't be rooting for you any time soon!

Does anyone have the overhead shot uploaded yet?
I'll go check NBC's site.
