Betsy,
I respect your love for the game and love of studying breeding.
Obviously anyone who ignores pedigree aspects altogether is crazy.
But if the game were as simple as simply picking out "the best" pedigrees every year. Then only the richest owners would have any success.
The fun of this game is watching horses like Afleet Alex turn into stars despite humble beginnings and humble pedigrees.
I think that those who watch races and handicap races vs. those who rate horses on pedigrees has been an age old battle that will never end.
I love to see a talented horse perform, whether it is a regally bred horse like Bernadini or one like Afleet Alex who has "no pedigree".
When I made the posts I made on CQ this past June I took a heck of a lot of grief, and there were many yesterday rooting against CQ so they could tell me I told you so.
I layed claim to him being "my horse" minutes, not hours, after he broke his maiden. I knew in his debut that I had seen a special horse. And whether its Bernadini or CQ, when you lay claim to a horse being "your horse", the pride you feel when he wins a grade one is much greater than any ticket you could ever cash.
Good luck with future bluebloods, I'm sure many will win.

At Churchill a Thursday, a most usual day,
'Til he stepped in the gate, a most talented bay.
He broke a step slow, but that is his style,
The others ran off, for just a short while.
At the 3/8 pole he started to run,
With his mouth wide open, and just havin' fun.
At the 1/8 pole, it was over for good,
I got so excited, I think I got wood.
I said to a friend, to a friend I did say,
Remember the name, it is Circular Quay.

Just a warning, I hear a lot of people pronounce Quay like Key.

I don't know which is correct but just to be on the safe side you might want to have an alternate rhyme in the works.
