Dubai's ruler gives $2 million to UK cancer unit via Lexington firm

Gift to UK center from Dubai's ruler
By Laura Ungar

The ruler of Dubai has donated $2 million to the Markey Cancer Foundation for a blood and bone marrow transplant unit at the University of Kentucky's cancer center.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, gave the gift through Darley Stud Management LLC, the Lexington-based American branch of Darley, his global thoroughbred-breeding company.

"Sheikh Mohammed has been interested in the Lexington community as more than just a home to breed and raise horses," said James Bell, president of Darley USA. "To be involved in something that touches so many people -- as cancer does -- is something that he has been interested in. It branches further than just the equine industry."

The money will be used for building materials, furniture and medical equipment such as monitors for the 15-bed blood and bone marrow transplant unit. In recognition of the gift, it will be named the Darley Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and will keep this name when it moves to the new UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital, scheduled to open in phases beginning in 2010.

Since it was founded in 1982, more than 1,100 patients have received transplants through the bone marrow program, which has experts in transplants using stem cells from the patients and those using stem cells from a donor.

"This is a pretty wonderful gift. We're thrilled," said Dr. Randall Rowland, president and CEO of the foundation, the fundraising arm for UK's Markey Cancer Center. "It's certainly a significant gift. It's not our largest gift ever, but it's the largest gift we've had in the last year."

Dr. Michael Karpf, executive vice president for health affairs at UK, said it "shows a commitment and engagement with the Lexington community for the sheikh, and that's very important.…You need to have community support to make institutions great."

Hey man look whos for sale !!!!!
Got any money ??? lol :-)
The Group 2 winning stallion young stallion, Written Tycoon is to be offered for sale at the Great Southern Sale in Victoria to dissolve the current syndicate.

Written Tycoon

A son of Iglesia and the Last Tycoon mare Party Miss from the immediate family of Group 1 winners Yell and Anthems, Written Tycoon was a good juvenile with his career highlight coming in the G2 Todman Slipper Trial, where he accounted for the Group 2 winners Jet Spur, Domesday and Flying Pegasus.
He was retired to Eliza Park stud and has been afforded every opportunity to attain success, having covered more than 200 mares during his two years covering mares.
The sale follows a decision by the shareholders which includes Eliza Park's stud master to end the current syndicate.
Although unfortunate, it's considered the best way of resolving the differences between various share holders. Eliza Park supports the action being taken, said, Eliza Park's CEO Cameron Croucher.
Croucher has acknowledged and thanked the breeders who have supported the stallion so well in his two years to date.
Written Tycoon will be offered for sale on Wednesday May 20 at 11am, immediately preceding the broodmare section of the Great Southern Sale.
Inglis Director Peter Heagney said this represented a rare opportunity to secure a young, commercial stallion on the open market.
"Written Tycoon has been strongly supported and importantly he has shown to have excellent fertility. He is a lovely individual himself and he is stamping that in his progeny, as I have seen some outstanding foals in his first crop,"¯ Heagney said.
All parties interested in purchasing Written Tycoon should contact Heagney at William Inglis. While inspections can be arranged by contacting David Somers at Eliza Park.

The 2009 Great Southern Sale will be held over four sessions, beginning next Monday, May 18 from 12 noon. The sale starts with two days of weanlings, before the bloodstock section begins on Wednesday.

WHAAAAAAA

Wow, that's bad news for Eliza Park, unless they manage to get other people to buy into him and bring him back there. He was probably my fav stallion during my time at Eliza. A proper character, although I also loved Magnus.

Thanks for that news, Magic.
