my husband and i both have 401k's that we're happy with. many companies have gone to offering these types of plans, as traditional pensions have become too expensive for most companies-i'd hate to see it go away, but just because alternatives are being examined doesn't mean it will go away. companies and individuals both would be against it being dismantled.

i haven't looked at it lately. but i'm sure this is where their interest in other ways to handle retirement is coming from. quite a few have taken a whack lately with their funds. BUT...those who are about to retire should have had their 401ks in the appropriate spots, not still in stocks. i'm sure it's a comfort for those who did to know that now..
i just wish people wouldn't automatically leap to the 'govt needs to help me out' mentality in every thing that goes poorly for them. we're losing sight of what our local, state and feds are supposed to be there for, and it's not to hold your hand every time things get rough.
