Wouldn't they have to be here legally in order to be violated according to the law? Oh, wai

i'm not sure why you think it has only to do with undocumented workers. wal-mart had a suit filed not long ago because of people working off the clock. a lot of companies encourage this sort of thing--they say they don't want you working off the clock, but they don't wish to pay overtime, but make you feel as tho you should accomplish everything on your schedule in the time allotted, and that if you haven't-perhaps you're not working as efficiently as you should. so, next thing you know, people are working off the clock.

the backstretch, along with a lot of other employers, are hurting for workers as a lot of people aren't filing for migrant visas--the numbers aren't as high as in years' past for people coming here to work.

i can't help wondering if there is a correlation between our current economic problems and the witchhunt mentality we've had for the last year or so regarding foreign workers. people won't come here if they are made to feel unwanted, and then employers can't fill vacancies. so then they have to hike their offered wages to try to attract people, raising their prices at the same time-which drives up inflation. and that's exactly what we're experiencing right now.

So, enforcing immigration and labor laws is a "witchhunt mentality?" I hope that law enforcement everywhere engages in "witchhunt mentality" more often, particularly in this area of widespread illegality.
i don't know the process of getting a visa to work here, since i'm not from another country, and never needed to get permission to work here.
but there are h2-a and h2-b programs for foreign workers to be able to get work here for a specified amount of time.
as for my comment on the 'witchhunt mentality'....i meant that in regards to the fact that many automatically assume that if someone looks mexican, well by god they must be here illegally. a lot of assuming going on as to who belongs here, and who doesn't.

Yes, those are nonimmigrant classifications (H2-A and H2-B).

As for those who appear to be illegal "on their face," so to speak, if I were witchhunting illegals, I'd certainly investigate hispanics. That group comprises an overwhelming percentage of illegal aliens in the United States. I'll excuse law enforcement agents and officers who don't zone in on Scandanavians.
yes, i understand that we have illegals, and that the majority come from south of the border. my issue is with everyone looking at every person who appears to be mexican and shouting 'INS'.
but then, where i live, racism is rampant on so many levels. it's sickening.

funny thing is, people shout something must be done about illegal immigrants. but what? it's very simplistic to say get them all out of here.
reality is that many think (with good reason) that social security has been kept solvent all these years due to the pay ins by illegals, who then can't collect-as the social security #'s they give are bogus. then there's the fact that the labor market is already tight, growers, planters, farmers are already scrambling for labor. in this area, pine is a big crop-and they can't plant enough trees as the # of people filing for worker visas has dropped dramatically.
so, produce costs will skyrocket, inflation has already grown by leaps and bounds due to gasoline-add labor in on top of it.
so yeah, the pollyannic view is do away with illegals. it sounds good in theory. now put it in practice, and see what happens.

i don't think that immigration violation is that huge for this country. we've got a lot of larger issues to deal with, but people get sidetracked with stuff like this.

Yes, I'm sure you are on the right track. All those rascally illegal alien latinos picking fruit for Dole and American Brands and cutting lawns or cleaning homes for WASPY Scandanavians are most definitely the big problem these days.

With all these illegal latins running around with easily obtained garden shears and cleaning solutions, it is a wonder that whenever a kid shoots up a high school or college with an automatic weapon, it is only a zillion times more likely to be a WASPY sort than a latino kid.

Thank God they haven't taken that over too.

Actually the amount of visas has been cut by the govt because of political reasons. The truth is that backside jobs are considered too hard by most americans and the ones that we have often are unemployable elsewhere. If you believe that the workforce picking fruit and CA and probably cleaning your building in NY are 100% in compliance with immigration and labor laws then maybe you would be interested in purchasing that bridge that connects manhattan and brooklyn?
