It doesn't excuse it. Not for a minute.
He was elected primarily for his views on tobacco. It makes it absolutely right for the people of North Carolina. You can't fault them or Helms for the complete ineptitude of the democratic party.

I'm much less concerned with how he continued to get elected, because it makes plenty of sense.

I'm more concerned with how people are attempting to defend him as a person, and to defend the things he said, as if they are somehow acceptable.

Ted Kennedy murdered a broad. I don't give a s.hit if people defend him or not.

Maybe you should care less. In the grand scheme of things Jesse Helms is meaningless to your everyday life.

I wish I believed that. In the grand scheme of my life, people like Jesse Helms and the hate they put forth and the people they rally with that and the bigoted mindset they continue to perpetuate actually play a pretty significant part.

You might be surprised.

We all know why he got elected. But that makes it ok to vote for a racist and a homophobe if it's good for their state? And that makes his statements defenseable?

ok..i'll edit this. If you are/were in small town South and all you know is tobacco, or whatever puts food on your table, I doubt you care much about his views on gays, blacks or much of anything. In fact, you probably heed his message because, well, you don't know differently. But this thread started out as an indictement of what he said and stood for in human terms, and I guess I was surprised that some tried to soften that message of hatred.

And the second statement is absolutely correct
