In my opinion the jockeys should make 10 percent, what they pay the valet should be totally up to them. If a jock makes a million a year, pays his agent 25pct, pays his Valet 5pct, and pays the Goverment what his tax bracket says hes supposed to pay it adds up quick.

If the pinheads are overpaid, so are the valets and agents. In some cases the valets are making more than trainers, that is ridiculous

Here is a question for the owners..........How many of us buy our jock a win ticket, the groom a win ticket, the barn a win ticket, the girl who gets on the horse in the morning a win ticket? If someone said on top of a 3k bill and 10 percent of anything you win owners need to stake the help would owners complain? Thats essentially what the jocks deal with, and while I dont like jocks I can certainly understand them thinking its excessive.

Sad when a valet makes more than a jock.

What is sad is a jockey that makes less money than a valet still riding.

i don't know that i agree 'most' jocks are overpaid. taking the high profile cases such as gomez and desormeaux and thinking everyone makes what they make in a year....well, not so. a lot of jocks out there, and a lot of smaller tracks.

Cannon thats just the way I see it. I dont think a trainers 10PCT should HAVE to be staked to the help. Just like I dont think the jocks should be forced to pay a set amount to a valet, and owners shouldnt be forced to buy the barn win tickets.

Im sure a lot of it is tax deductable, its still a lot of money for a lot of nothing. I have no issue with saying a jock is overpaid, but if thats the case so are the valets and agents.

I am not saying the jocks are overpaid. If they are good at their job I have no problem with them being well compensated. I do believe that they are ungrateful, spoiled babies in many cases. They contribute far less to a horses success than a trainer yet are paid the same amount. Maybe we should pay them 5% like the harness drivers get? I suppose Coa doesnt realize that he is a broken arm away from being a hotwalker too. By paying the valets less and increasing their taxable income, they will wind up paying the govt more. That makes a lot of sense. They complain about the weights (which is total bs), they want someone else to pay their insurance bills, they bankrupt their own organization yet want more handouts for their worthless "media rights", they want to pay their employees less, etc. the tracks do their accounting and billing for them for nothing.

Haha good one but no, a jockey valet saddles the horse, cleans the tack & clothes, gets the silks for each race, helps them dress for each race, etc.

I believe that you are reading the situation in a strange manner. Owners buy a win ticket for the help as a bonus, not as a salary. I am not a tax accountant but I am sure that the 5% they pay the valet is a deductable expense. It is a money grab by the most well paid group in the business.
