In the last few years, it's taken $125,000 to not have to sweat it out. I'mawildandcrazyguy got in last year with less but wasn't assured of a spot until late. You have to look at newly graded races and purse increases, though, from year to year.

If we wind up with a filly in the race and any horses from overseas it could easily wind up $200,000 this year. That Delta Jackpot race alone being graded will put three extra a year in.

i believe the delta was graded last year with birdbird winning the jackpot but opting to not run in the Derby

Everyone says that every year, but generally, the horses that have the $$$ but truly don't belong, don't go. I can think of a few they probably should have passed and many that with hindsight were dreadful mistakes, but AT THE TIME most of the starters in the last 10 or so Derbies were horses that belonged.
