It does seem to be a common thread...I never thought about it but "evil clowns" tend to show up in fiction a lot...obviously they wouldn't appear unless the writers had insight into the fear.

My daughter hates "It". Has never been big on clowns. They don't bother me with the exception of John Wayne Gacy.
