Must admit, I too have done the turtle rescue thing, but I'm not too sure that doing it is a good thing. There's the danger of getting hit by a car and the added danger of being bitten by the turtle. Most of those that I have rescued are harmless box turtles, but a few have been snappers and they don't care whether you're trying to help them or not, they just want to take a plug out of you. My 5 year old grandson loves turtles, frogs, snakes, whatever. I took him to the Bass-Pro shop in Springfield, Mo this past weekend. Bass Pro shop had some live turtles and next door in a natural history type museum they had a giant alligator snapping turtle with a head as big around as my leg. My grandson was blown away.

Yeah, I'm not without sense when i help something out. I live in a pretty rural area, so my risk of getting hit by a car is minimal, even with the high nascar fan/redneck % here.

The snapper was just a baby as well. I'm pretty experienced with handling animals, as I've even captured by hand a few rattlesnakes, back when I was a bit more wreckless.

Cats though? Now those are critters you gotta be careful with!

Cows too. I was almost murdered once by a stampeding herd while fishing the Owens river in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. That was one of the most surreal and unnerving experiences of my entire life!

yeah, we're in a very rural setting as well. i'm not going to be dodging traffic ala sylvester the cat trying to rescue a turtle.
we actually had two box turtles living in my garden tub for a month--both sons in boy scouts, and they were trying to earn the reptile and amphibian merit badge--and altho i don't have a problem with snakes, i don't necessarily want them residing IN my house for a month. so, we lined the tub with paper, added in dirt, moss, etc. a box for privacy, food, water etc...evidentally they were pretty content, as we did find out eventually that one was a male, and one a female.

What do you mean by 'attacked'? Maybe he mistook you for a hen?

From the looks of things, both of our mishaps with animals happened with domestic animals, not wild ones.

Attacks by Roosters occur more often than one would think, my best friend in high school had a small scar on her face from being attacked too. I think some get overly territorial or something (having never discussed this with a rooster I can only guess). They will dig their talons into you (in this case my winter jacket) while pecking and wildly flap their wings.
