coming from central Illinois. eventually end up on I-90

and I would like to stay close but not necessarily in Albany

I drive 45 mins from the Spa (Fonda), I'm sure you could a nice motel in the Johnstown/Gloversville area, 40 mins from the Spa.

I don't know of any spots that are bad to be on I-90, the drive through PA and western NY is wicked boring though.

Like HHH said the Johnstown/Gloversville area is about 40 minutes west. Utica is a little over an hour west, Syracuse about two hours west, and Rochester a little over three.

umm. I live in corn country
there is nothing but flat roads and corn

Then you'll feel right at home in on the Thruway until you hit Herkimer.

Holiday Inn-Johnstown
Best Western-Little Falls
One right off the Exit 30 in Herkimer(actually 2 but one is a dump)Behind Denny's

There's a few more but I can't remember right now.
